Citroen has revealed that it will launch the C5 Aircross SUV in India towards the end of next year. The SUV will be a rival to the Jeep Compass, Tata Harrier, Hyundai Tucson and the upcoming Kia SP2i and MG Hector. Apart from the Citroen C5 Aircross, the company will launch one new product every year from 2021 till 2023.
The new vehicles will be manufactured and introduced first in India before being launched in the international markets. It isn’t clear whether these will be all-new nameplates or new-generation versions of the existing models. However, our understanding is that the company will launch the next-gen versions of its current line-up.
Citroen C4 Aircross
The first of these products to hit the Indian market could be the next-gen Citroen C4 Aircross. The current-gen C4 Aircross is an extended wheelbase version of the C3 Aircross that is specific to the Chinese market. In the Indian context, the Citroen C4 Aircross will be a rival to the Hyundai Creta, Nissan Kicks, and Renault Duster. In China, the SUV is offered with 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol and a 1.6-litre turbocharged diesel motor. Both engines are available with manual and automatic transmissions.
Citroen C3 Aircross
The next car to be launched in India could be the new generation Citroen C3 Aircross. Citroen could introduce the new C3 Aircross as a rival to the likes of Hyundai Venue, Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Ford EcoSport and the Mahindra XUV300. The current model measures 4,154mm in length. However, it shares its platform with the C3 hatchback, which is under 4-metre in length. It uses the same engine and gearbox combo as the C4 Aircross but gets a different state of tune.
The last product under this plan is likely to be the next generation Citroen C3 hatchback. It will be a direct competition to the Hyundai Elite i20, Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Tata Altroz and the Honda Jazz. The C3 is powered by 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated as well as turbo-charged petrol engines. All these cars mentioned above are based on the PSA PF1 platform, which is easily scalable to accommodate various body-styles and sizes.
