Spec comparison: MG Hector vs Tata Harrier

MG Hector is the latest entrant into the premium mid-size SUV segment, which comprises the likes of Jeep Compass, Mahindra XUV500 and the Hyundai Tucson. However, it’s Tata Harrier that is touted to be a direct rival to MG Hector in India. The SUV will be launched in India next month, and the date will be announced in the coming weeks. So, it’s only fair to compare the two cars based on their features, specifications and dimensions.

Dimensions

At 4655mm long, the Hector is the longest car in its segment, and measures 1835mm in width and 1760mm in height. It has a decent ground clearance of 192mm and the largest-in-segment wheelbase of 2750mm and a boot space capacity of 587 litres.

On the other hand, Tata Harrier is the widest SUV in its class at 1894mm. It measures 4598mm in length and 1706mm in height, while the wheelbase is only 9mm shorter than the Hector at 2741mm. On the flipside, it comes with a comparatively higher ground clearance of 205mm.

Features

Both the SUVs are feature packed, but its MG Hector that offers more creature comforts. That said, Tata Harrier makes up for it with multiple drive modes and the terrain response systems. The Hector offers quite a few segment-first features like a 10.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, LED projector headlamps and fog lamps, panoramic sunroof, 360-degree camera, 50-plus internet services, heated ORVMs, ambient lighting and much more.

Tata Harrier, on the other hand, comes loaded with features like a floating touchscreen display, a 7-inch MID, auto headlamps and wipers, cruise control system, traction control system, hill-hold control and much more. It also gets six airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist, speed alert system and ISOFIX child seat restraints among others.

Engine and Transmission 

Powering the MG Hector will be a 1.5L turbocharged petrol motor and a 2.0L turbo-diesel engine. The petrol mill makes 141bhp and 250Nm and is mated to a six-speed manual and DCT gearboxes. It also gets an optional 48V mild hybrid system that provides an additional boost of 20Nm. The 2.0L diesel powertrain is available only with a six-speed manual transmission. It puts out 170bhp and 350Nm.

Tata Harrier uses the same Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre diesel motor that has been tuned to produce 138bhp and 350Nm. It is being offered with a six-speed manual gearbox at the moment. However, it is slated to get an automatic transmission before the end of this year. Furthermore, Tata Motors is reportedly working on a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol motor that will power the Harrier and the upcoming 7-seater Tata Buzzard (tentative name).
