MG Motor plans to produce up to 1 lakh cars annually in India

- Plans to produce 80,000-1,00,000 units a year
- A Jeep Compass/Hyundai Tucson rival will be introduced in the first half of 2019
- A fully Electric Vehicle (EV) might be introduced in 2020.
- Plant will be spacious enough to expand production to 2,00,000 units

MG Motor has revealed its plans to make an affirmative debut in the Indian market. The company will be introducing a Jeep Compass/Hyundai Tucson rival in the first half of 2019. The SUV has reportedly been designed and engineered in the UK and China.  The second vehicle would be a fully Electric Vehicle (EV) which will be introduced in 2020. Interestingly, the EV will be locally produced and powertrain components would be imported from China. The rest of the upcoming vehicles will receive components from the local companies.

Initially, MG Motor is looking at 75 per cent localization. The Indian facility will initially produce around 80,000-1,00,000 units a year and will have space to build additional facilities to expand production to 2,00,000 lakh units. In the first phase, MG Motor has brought in SAIC Motor suppliers and have built a vendor park within the plant area itself and in phase two, the company looks forward to increasing the localization.      

The Chinese state-owned automotive design and manufacturing company, the SAIC works in collaboration with other local companies. This will mean that the partnership could also result in more cars being introduced in India over a certain period of time. A full dealer partner list would be ready by November and the company plans to have about 45 dealer partners and 100 dealerships gradually in the days to come.
