Honda’s e Concept previews its first electric hatchback

-    The Honda e Concept will make its public debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.
-    It is almost a production-ready version of the 2017 Urban EV Concept.
-    Likely to make its way to India as a part of Honda’s 2021 electrification plan.

Honda is arriving at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show with the cutesy little e Concept. Touted to be the near-production version of the 2017 Urban EV Concept, the e Concept previews the first all-electric hatchback from Honda which is set to arrive at the turn of the decade.

The e Concept is a part of Honda’s ‘Electric Vision’ strategy for the European countries. It retains much of its design and shape from the Urban EV concept sans the futuristic screens on the exterior panels. Yet there are futuristic elements on the e Concept such as cameras that replace the rear view mirror. The circular headlamps and taillamps are integrated into the blacked-out panels with a blackened finish on the roof and skirts all around the car and a floating C-pillar, as well.

Even the large alloy wheels – which are finished in all-black – look production ready. The smooth body contours, flush A-pillars and door handle, charging point integrated centrally into the bonnet and LED lights visible behind the glass panel are characteristic of the e Concept.

On the inside, there are no less than five screens dominating the cabin of the e Concept. The seats offer a lounge-like feel and have a sense of spaciousness which is enhanced by the walk-through flat floor in the front and rear of the cabin, claims the carmaker. There is a wooden finish dashboard as well, to an array of next-generation digital aids.

Under the skin, there is an all-new EV-specific platform developed specially for the new crop of electric Hondas. No specific details regarding the powertrain have been divulged at the moment, but the Japanese carmaker claims a range of 200 kilometres and a fast charging feature that will reach 80 per cent in 30 minutes.

More details of the Honda e Concept will be revealed next week at the Geneva stage. So stay tuned to CarWale for in-depth coverage of all the developments from the Swiss auto show.
