BMW India has started the production of their upcoming new X3 in India. The SUV is being built at the carmaker's manufacturing facility at Chennai and will be launched on 19 April.
This new SUV will accompany the other BMW products currently being manufactured at the Chennai Plant. At present, the BMW 3 Series, 3 Series GT, 5 Series, 6 Series GT, 7 Series, X1, X5 and the X3 are being locally produced. This BMW plant will also start the local production of the Mini Countryman.
The X3 has always been one of the best-selling SUVs from BMW's X range. Next month, the latest iteration of the SUV will be added to the Bavarian automaker's portfolio. The first model of the X3 was launched in 2003 and ever since over 1.5 million X3s have been sold. Prospective buyers in India have been those who wanted a Rs 50 lakh BMW, but not a sedan. The new SUV will continue to cater to this demand and will compete against the Mercedes-Benz GLC, Volvo XC60, Land Rover Discovery Sport and the upcoming Audi Q5 in the Indian market.
