Renault discontinues automatic and base variants of the Scala

Renault India has discontinued the base RxE variant of the Scala and even the automatic variants. The sedan is now available only in RxL petrol and RxZ and RxL diesel variants.

When the Renault Scala was first launched in 2012, it was launched in a total of five variants. These included the petrol RxE and RxL with manual transmission, RxL with CVT Automatic gearbox; and two diesel variants - RxL and RxZ. Now, only the top-of-the-line trims will be offered with the manual gearbox.

The engine lineup continues with one petrol and one diesel engine, both mated to the five-speed manual transmission. The petrol mill is a 1.5-litre XH2 engine producing 98bhp of power and 134Nm of torque while the oil-burner is powered by the popular 1.5-litre dCi K9K engine that churns out 85bhp of power and 200Nm of torque. The ARAI certified fuel efficiency of the Scala Diesel is rated at 21.64kmpl and that of the Scala Petrol at 16.95kmpl.

Renault Scala is the mid ranged premium sedan that is similar to the Nissan Sunny and competes in the C-segment of cars in India. The heat of the competition has increased ever since many new cars like the Honda City, Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Hyundai Verna etc. have been introduced with many new features. The demand for the base variants and automatic variants of the Scala has dipped, making Renault offer the Scala in the top-end trims with most of the features.

Renault is also offering discounts of up to Rs 35,000 on the Scala. Probably only the reincarnation of the Scala can happen with its revamped version to be launched for the Indian market. This might also ensure the revival of the sales numbers too.
