Volkswagen is pumping up its high-riding portfolio with no less than 19 models planned by 2025. One of them will be spawned from the all-new Volkswagen Tarok Concept showcased at the 2018 Sao Paulo Motor Show.
The Tarok Concept is a pick-up spanning five-metres with its four-door double cab layout. Built ground up – according to VW – the Tarok is based on the same MQB platform as the new crop of Volkswagens including the T-Roc and smaller T-Cross.
The striking feature of the Tarok Concept is its variable loading area concept. It is basically the Targa-inspired roof bar, with a foldable rear seat to extend the usable space on the truck bed. The fascia carries typical Volkswagen concept elements akin to the one seen on the Amarok Concept. Meanwhile, the cabin looks production ready as it appears to be picked up straight from the T-Roc. The distinct material for the roof with roof rails and a modern SUV design makes the Tarok Concept a rather handsome looking thing.
The maximum load carrying capacity is claimed to be around one tonne. Powering the concept is a 1.4-litre four-cylinder TSI engine producing 150bhp. The transmission is a six-speed automatic sending power to permanent 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system. The engine can run on Brazil’s TotalFlex fuel unit with pure ethanol as well as a gasoline-ethanol blend. A 2.0-litre TDI is also confirmed for the production model but that will come later.
Volkswagen has confirmed a series production vehicle based on the Tarok Concept to go on sale in Brazil soon and that too “with barely any changes”. After that, the new pickup will join the Amarok in the German carmaker’s global model range.
