Every time one thinks about a Targa top, it’s Porsche that comes to the mind. But now Ferrari thinks it can do better and has made a filing with the European Patent Office for an updated targa top setup that seeks to reduce aerodynamic turbulence inside the cabin when the car is being driven top down.
Now Ferrari has done Targa tops before like in the F50, and now it’s trying to make a comeback with it again. Ferrari's new version features a removable roof panel often made of a plastic material to have a reduced weight and therefore be easily handled by one person, which when in place is supported by the windscreen frame at the front, and a robust full-width roll bar incorporating a transparent window at the rear.
However, Ferrari's design attempts to eliminate the usual turbulence passengers in Targa cars experience by increasing the height of the windshield to a few centimeters above the roll bar. This ensures that air flows above the cabin space. The air then flows over the rear deck or down into a pair of vents located in the parcel shelf.
It’s not clear which car will debut with the new roof, but it could find itself in the 488 GTB or in the 488’s successor.
