The fastest and most powerful car in the Polo family has joined its siblings in undergoing a generational change and has been showcased at the 2017 Frankfurt Auto Show. Although globally, it’s been called the Polo GTi, in India, we will get this beast as the Volkswagen GTI and it should be here once the new Polo hits Indian soil.
The formula governing performance VWs have been retained in the new generation GTI. You get the same sixth generation body and evolutionary design but with obvious bits like the red stripe in the grille, GTI badges and of course, those snazzy wheels to complete the package. From this generation onwards, VW has dropped the three-door format and the entire Polo range is now four-door.
It’s a similar story in the cabin, but this time around, the deal includes a virtual cockpit, touchscreen infotainment system and climate control. The new design appears to have made the cabin bigger and spacious. That’s something we will really appreciate when the Polo makes its way to India both in regular and GTI form. Putting the GTI in Polo GTI is a 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 187bhp/250Nm of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a seven-speed DSG.
The stock Polo is due in India next year and this one will follow a short while later in the GTI guise.
