Tata Motors is planning to localise AMT kits for the Nano. The company is taking this step due to good response that has led to two months waiting period of the Nano AMT.
Currently, Tata Motors imports the automated manual transmission (AMT) from Magneti Marelli. The company claims that almost 40 per cent of the Nano’s overall sales come from the AMT version, leading to a high waiting period. While Tata Motors refused to give more information on this, one of the top honchos mentioned that this should happen during the next calendar year.
Localising the AMTs won’t just help the Nano but will also help the company in future, as they are planning to launch more models with this technology. AMT cars have been in demand since its introduction in the Indian car market. The Maruti Suzuki Celerio was the first one to get this and then the industry followed. Currently, the Alto K10, WagonR gets it along with the Tata Zest diesel. In fact, Mahindra recently launched the TUV300 with the AMT kit and plans to do the same with the facelifted Quanto. Renault is expected to launch the Kwid AMT at the 2016 Auto Expo.
