The Volkswagen T-Roc has been relaunched in India with an escalated price over the 2020 model. The T-Roc is imported as a completely built unit (CBU), offered in a single variant with six colours to choose from.
Inside, the T-Roc hopes to awe with its features; the highlights inside include the large panoramic sunroof which helps brighten up the space, an eight-inch central infotainment touchscreen with multiple connectivity options and in-built features and an 11.3-inch all-digital driver display. Heated front seats, a dual-zone climate control system with rear A/C vents, split-folding rear seats and intelligent storage space are other features that make the T-Roc’s cabin exciting.
The T-Roc has a younger version of the familiar VW fascia seen on SUVs like the Tiguan and the AllSpace. The brighter colour palette, unique hexagonal LED DRLs on the front bumper, large 17-inch alloy wheels, design flourishes like the sail-boat like C-pillar design and concealed exhausts make the T-Roc stand out amongst the competition.
The T-Roc is offered with a single powertrain option - a 1.5-litre TSI ‘Evo’ petrol engine paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission powering the front wheels exclusively. The four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine develops 148bhp and 250Nm, which is not a new performance benchmark for the segment. It does have a fuel-saving trick up its sleeve though, it can shut off two cylinders during coasting to save fuel - though the company has not stated how efficient it is in ARAI’s testing cycle.
The Volkswagen T-Roc is a sporty crossover and certainly a departure from Volkswagen’s understated styling. The designers have nicely played with the colour palette, and that combined with its superior build quality, makes the T-Roc a premium offering in its segment. However, with no diesel option and a higher price tag than before, one will just have to wait it out to see how this car stacks up in the future.
