Hyundai’s new upcoming hatchback has been under development for quite some time now. Long enough to create the rumour that it will be a volume generator for the Korean carmaker. Codenamed AH2, rumours have it that the hatchback will bring back the favourite Santro moniker, thereby marking the 20th anniversary of the hatchback in India. The newest video of the test mule spotted in Palwal, Haryana, revealed that the hatchback will get a new cascading grille just like all the new Hyundais.
The new entry-level hatchback will be a spiritual successor to the i10 and a rival to the Tata Tiago, Maruti Suzuki Celerio and Renault Kwid. Therefore, in terms of styling, the new hatch might adopt a tall-boy stance. Going by Hyundai’s recent design philosophy, the cascading grille will be flanked with LED lights and a smart bumper design. There are no shots that offer a clue about the cabin of the test mule yet, but we can surely expect it to be the most feature-laden hatchback in its segment.

The hatchback is expected to employ a newer platform and might get a petrol-only engine option. An all-new four-cylinder petrol engine has commenced production at the Korean carmaker’s Chennai plant lately and this might be the same motor which will power the new hatchback. Transmission options could also include an AMT along with a standard manual unit.
Hyundai has remained tight-lipped about the official reveal of the new hatchback nd even whether it will be called the Santro or not. We’ll have to wait for official word from the Korean carmaker regarding the new hatch. In the meantime, keep watching this space for further information.
