Frankfurt Motor Show 2019: BMW X5 Protection VR6 unveiled

- New BMW X5 Protection VR6 can withstand 15 kgs of TNT from a distance of four metres

- The model is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine

The new BMW X5 Protection V46 is being showcased at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany. Based on the standard X5, the model conforms to the VR6 resistance levels and is aimed at markets including Russia, Africa and South America. The new X5 Protection VR6 provides protection against attacks by handguns and long firearms using ammunition such as the AK-47, withstands lateral blasts of up to 15 kilograms of TNT from a distance of four metres and up to 200 grams of C4.

Another highlight of the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 is the self-sealing fuel tank that features a special sheathing, ensuring that the tank closes automatically following an attack in order to prevent fuel spillage. Also on offer are run-flat tyres with reinforced sidewalls that allow the driver to continue the journey even after a complete loss of tyre pressure. Optional model-specific post-crash functions also serve to retain mobility in extreme situations. They ensure that the engine of the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 is not switched off after a collision and that the energy supply is not interrupted.

Propelling the new BMW X5 Protection VR6 is a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 530bhp and 750Nm of torque. The model can sprint from 0-100 kmph in just 5.9 seconds, all the way up to a top speed of 210 kmph. Visual elements that differentiate the new X5 Protection VR6 from the regular model are limited to the flashing blue lights and the beacon on top of the car.
