BMW X4 starts arriving at dealerships

- The second-gen BMW X4 is locally assembled in India alongside the upcoming X7.

- Launched in three variants with two diesels and one petrol engine options.

- All three versions come standard with the M Sport X trim package

BMW launched the all-new X4 in India a few days ago without any fanfare. The coupe-SUV is priced at Rs 60.60 lakhs for the 20d and Rs 65.90 lakhs for the 30d while the 30i petrol trim carries a price tag of Rs 63.50 lakhs (all prices ex-showroom). All versions of the X4 come standard with AWD and the M Sport X package. This X4 is the second coupe-SUV in the Bavarian carmaker’s line-up after the X6 and has been brought into the country via local assembly at BMW’s Chennai plant.

BMW first showcased the new second-gen X4 at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. It replaced the first-gen X4, which has a short lifespan. The X4 is basically a coupe-SUV version of the X3 similar to the GLC-Coupe. The new X4 has a design identical to the new-gen X3 in the form of trapezoidal headlamps which are flanking the large kidney grille. The bumper has been redesigned compared to the older car and carries an aggressive stance. The coupe-SUV gets a characteristic low-slung roofline which sweeps towards the rear deck. At the rear, there is a slim three-dimensional L-shaped tail light and a bumper-mounted number plate. The xLine variant we see here sits on 19-inch alloy wheels. Based on the all-new CLAR platform, the new model is lighter by about 50kgs than its predecessor but is dimensionally bigger.

On the inside, the X4 has a typical BMW cabin which comes with a 6.5-inch freestanding infotainment display. The new model now offers an additional 27mm of rear legroom space along with an additional 25 litres of boot space, thereby bringing the total to 525 litres. With the standard 40:20:40-split rear seats folded, the boot space has now been increased to 1,430 litres. The vehicle now also has a larger panoramic roof, power-adjustable seats with heating and ventilation, three-zone automatic climate control and acoustic side windows.

Under the hood of the 20d variant is a 2.0-litre diesel producing 190bhp/400Nm while the 30d has a 3.0-litre straight-six putting out 265bhp/620Nm. The single petrol variant in the 30i guise too has a 3.0-litre straight-six which has an output of 185bhp/350Nm. All variants come with eight-speed automatic transmission with AWD as standard.

The BMW X4 competes with the likes of the Jaguar F-pace, Volvo XC60, Lexus NX and Audi Q5 in terms of pricing. But it is a niche offering in the segment thanks to the coupe-SUV body style.
