Fiat Punto Evo Review
The Fiat Punto is the Italian automaker’s premium hatchback and has been on sale in the Indian market since 2009 with both petrol and diesel engines. The 2014 Punto Evo gets significant external changes as well as brand new interiors which it shares with the Linea sedan.
The facelifted Fiat Punto retains the same overall proportions and design as the current car but will have enough elements to make it stand out. The fascia is very similar to that of the Avventura concept car and this includes the swept back headlights, new Fiat logo and bumper with mesh air intake. The positions of the elements remain the same as the current car but now there is chrome on the fog lamp housing and in the middle of the grille.
The side profile remains the same as the previous car and this includes the flared wheel arches, tyre profile and shoulder line on the doors. This car retains the same forward leaning stance as the previous vehicle giving the Punto a sporty stance. The Punto Evo gets a smaller Christmas tree rear light setup as compared to the outgoing car and this time the design looks modern and suits the forward slant of the car. Fiat has added a large chrome strip to the base of the bumpers and has integrated the reflectors into this setup giving the Punto a modern yet premium appeal.
The Fiat Punto Evo gets exactly the same interior setup as the facelifted Linea. This includes a revised dashboard as well as a new instrument cluster which now gives the car a more modern appeal. The storage spaces inside the car have been improved with the addition of new cubby holes.
Some of the standard features include automatic head lamps, rain sensing wipers, power windows, rear defogger, remote keyless entry and tail gate opening, rear AC vents and a music system. The top-spec petrol and diesel variants of the Linea now get 16-inch alloy wheels, leather trim for seats, gear knob and steering, cruise control and climate control. We expect that these will continue even with the Punto.
The facelifted Fiat Punto gets the same set of engines as the previous car- there are two petrol engines- a 1.2-litre unit that produces 67bhp/96Nm and a 1.4-litre unit that produces 89bhp/115Nm. The diesel unit is the 1.3-litre Multijet that exists in two states of tune- 75bhp/197Nm and 90bhp/209Nm. All variants have been mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
The facelifted Fiat Punto competes in the B+segment with the Hyundai Elite i20, Volkswagen Polo and the Honda Jazz.
