      Drove the2.2 VTT Safari beast.
1st gear it leaps when you de-clutch like a monster unleashed.
2nd it has a pronounced soft spot/ turbo lag till 2000 rpm when the turbo kicks in. However when one stops and starts in city traffic or while going over a speed breaker, it can be a pain.
      3rd/ 4th/ 5th fine.
3rd being drive gear its ok but when you slacken speed a lot, despite all that torque and BHP it will still have to be down shifted to 1st to have that pep. This means more fuel consumption definitely.
Great cruiser though and will be blissful on highways - 3 level lumbar support on the seats-good for lower back. Very very spacious and comfortable and lots of toys to play with - electrically operated rear view mirrors and blah blah blah.
Good powerful AC should be adequate for back seat passengers also.
Terribly mushy far away vague gear box rather like an Indica V2 DLG Turbo.
Steering feedback from bumps etc very slight.
Cant feel the bumps through the seats etc because it is very comfy.
If you drive with some chicaning around a bit and then apply the brake the tail feels rather waggy while braking.
Not very pronounced body roll in normal circumstances but could become irritating on winding hill roads.
2WD version more than adequate for off roading -very capable - took it quite off the road onto some rutted tracks and ups and downs - can hardly feel the bumps except that on severe ups and downs it handles like a boat. Differential suspension very good. Seats hold you well.
Some places while turning while off road, went into a dry skid, very controllable though since not at high speed. It climbs over normal sized obstacles like a monster.
Brakes seem adequate but am not sure how well they will perform while braking at speeds like 120 etc.
The BHP is evident and so is the torque but I am highly displeased about the Turbo Lag problem.
The vehicle feels really big and reversing into tight spots will definitely be troublesome especially in Bangalore.
If I take it to Ooty etc it will be good on the highways but the Sigur Ghats may prove irritating because of roll, pitch and yaw which is tangible.
Rear wheel driven thank god, so most rough roads can be dealt with. Good ground clearance so wont get too bad on rough roads and rutted tracks.
Parts and Spares could turn out more expensive than Mahindra as can the service bills.
Tata scores by the sheer amount of freebies you get at the price you pay. No doubt about that. But will I enjoy keeping it for more than 3 years? I dont know really. And the re-sale value issue is still not clear with this 2.2 VTT.

Very tough to choose between this and the Scorpio. The Scorpio seems more of a Driver's Jeep but the Tata lures one with the features offered and seems as close as one can get to affordable luxury.
Looks. Comfort. Big and feels very powerful.Brakes? Pitch and Yaw. Turbo Lag in 2nd Gear. Highly Squashy gear box.

      So this is my story...

I tell you the conclusion first . If you have money never go for safari. and if you dont go for it and be prepared to spend 60000 an year that is again value for money. when you add 8.5 lacs + 60k X 5 years 3 lacs comes to 11.5 lacs again cheaper than 18 lacs that you pay. So again it is a bargain accpeting the fact that the safary will stay in garage every 6 months for atleast 15 days for lack of spares  (very expensive spares).

Exterior I purchased this machine coz it was value for money. 2.2 dicor never liked the exterior. but price price and good suspension. The colour catches bubbles in very first month (silver colour), The plastic crash guard  losses shine in first summer heat , in 1 month the colour started showng bubbles, noise starts popping from doors. Automatic windos (2 out of 4) failed in very first month. I could repair only one rear window after hectic efforts and paying 4000 . now it is 5 year of operation and drive window is still not working .

yesssssssss... head light catches moisture very first rain and fortune says we will replace when new arrives then they say warranty expired. I could see every alternate safary with moisture in head light. Tata is doing nothing. Winder not available if available it is louzy.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) I will not comment about internal handles, 2 of them failed in very 3 rd month. Now i request copassengers to be very polite with them (door handles) Seats absolutely worst . possibly tata is not aware or not seen the world class toyota or maruti seats. (but itna paise me yahi milata hai... how can I forget this slogan hahah).

Front panel console lighter doors ashtray doors ..abslotely cheap and are BROKEN always.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Now uptill I have discussed not so important issues, now the major issues...

FUEL injectors: My God! one fine morning the car just did not start... (2.5 years), Towed to the fortune cars nerul. let me be specific... They told me that the fuel injectors have failed, after 8 days and a visit by the fuel injector manufacturer singineer LUCAS.

Cost: 12000 each total 4, labour some thing more total repair cost 60000, 20 days in garage...

No fault of mine, I have never seen a car with failed fuel injector so early, I am still wondering why did they fail, If any body knows then please update my knowledge. Next I must tell you how much you need for suspension overhaul whooping 45000/-

Rear shock absorbers not changed. just bushes and one front shock absorber availability after 10 days.

      Work quality: satisfactory.

Ohh how could I forget clutch plate (3rd year) whooping 15000/- availability as usual 10 days...

I could see atleast 3 customers waiting for clutch plate with safaries in the show room. specifically fortune cars nerul.

Ride Quality & Handling It is good, let me confess...

but again worst after sales, worst epensive, ok ignored the cost, but availability, you dont even get a simple fuel meter or door handle replaced before 1 month, glass winder, years together, and no good fitters.

Final Words If you have money and want the machine to be with you every day. Never go for safary.

And you should rather go for mahindra. My god the ride quality of mahindra not good but very reliable and again cheaper spares, well they seldom fail and they are available too.

Reliability on road is 80 percent. It always failed while I was nearby I guess I was lucky.

      Verdict: Never buy a safary.

Areas of improvement Many... let me give list

      1) seats.

      2) sturdy front console.

      3) glass winders (they are louzy just the right word).

      4) ingine fuel injectors, you never know when and why they fail.

      5) clutch plate mechanism.

6 ) head lamps need urgent attention related to moisture.

good suspension, low price that is all but it is forgotten after an year.part worn off very fast , automatic windows fail in 6 months, spares shit expensive and not availabl

Exterior Macho and the Scorpio is also overshadowed, the LX,EX,GX and VX(All variants)get ORVM Turn Indicators. Also the tailgate is good looking, unlike the SantaFe which has a MUV-ish tailgate.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Interiors are futuristic, are solid but CD/MP3 Player looks like the dealer has fitted one plus confusing a bit.But it gets lots of Features, including powered mirrors,ABS,Alloys and even AUX-in port. The GX BS-IV gets no Airbags like the VX but it is fully loaded.Space is great, even roomy cabin. More roomy than bigger Aria!!!! And the Innova.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox

Engine is great, even is fuel efficient

      Scorpio-18 KPL

      Innova-14 KPL

      Aria-15 KPL

      Xylo-17 KPL

      Safari-20 KPL

      Captiva-16 KPL

      Endeavour-15.56 KPL

      Grand Vitara-7 KPL

      Even the gear is great.

Ride Quality & Handling Great, sporty handling.

Final Words GX Safari BS-IV-22 Nov 2010 Model-Walnut Gold Colour. The Safari is fuel efficient and feature packaged. The ABS is effective.

Areas of improvement CD player can be improved. It looks like the dealer has fitted one.And the design is poor of the CD player but great sound quality.

Features,Looks,Price,Performance,Interior DesignNothing,Because Base Variants Also Get ORVM Turn Indicators

      Hi Readers,
I own Safari VX 4 x 2 DICOR bought brand new from the show room 6 months back, I bought this vehicle keeping in mind Tata and the price criteria but after a month I realised that was the worst decision I did as the handling of the vehicle on higways is very poor, break down are quite often as my vehicle was in the service centre under warranty repair due to some manufacturing fault and when I told them the break down are so often then there is some serious problem with the vehicle and I told them to replace or return my money as after every 15 days you will find something or the other problem in the vehicle but the people at tata motors told that this is not their policy and they did not do any thing, so in my view putting is 1 or 2 lac extra and buy a vehicle which is reliable and tension free.

      Thanks for reading.
nothing good about this vehiclehandling poor, safety god knows, breakdown quite often, too noisy from inside

The servicing of all the tata authorised dealer is very baad. one time there is some problem is come in my a.c. i go to service station. they repair my a.c. in three times in a month but they cannot solve my problem and the service station manager say it is a gift from  tata for puchasing a tata motor vechicle. in the end i repair my car a.c.  from unauthorised dealer. so my suggustion to all the new car buyer is that u will purchase a cycle but don"t purchase car from tata motors basicaly tata is truck manufacturer they dont have to make car. they dont have any idea to how to make car the basic thing in india which is necessary in indian car is  a.c. but they have no mind how to make main basic need.

Exterior: Excellent look nothing can beat it.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort): Interiors requires imporvement, space is Good enough & is comfortable. The doors are little noisy.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox: There is a problem in injector, they are not able to filter the fuel properly and gets blocked and the authorized service station keeps the vehicle for around one week that means you are without vehicle. Nobody is there to entertain you, you keep runnning from pillar to post they will take their own sweet time and even if you complaint to their customenr service at toll free number again they good for nothing. They are just there to attend the phone and not to solve your problem, I dont know TATA people are giving salary to these people and wasting there money.

Ride Quality & Handling: Very Gud

Final Words: Response and after sales service needs imporvement.

Areas of improvement: After Sales service requires 100% improvement. I have seen max authorized service centers who are not at all interested in customers.

Gud look, less jerks, comfortable, king of road.interiors can be improved, injector problem, noise in doors which irritates.

      Exterior

       good styling

      Interior (Features, Space & Comfort)

Presentable. The glove box keep falling out

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox

the car is 2009 model and I have just done about 90000km. the car has been giving problems from day one. tata changed the engine once and it has left me in the middle of nowhere more than 4 times. Overheating, bad A/C, very bad ABS etc are its main features, if you would like to call it. I now spend an average of Rs.9000 everymonth in the workshop and none of then can get the car fixed. I tried with Concord workshop and their dealer workshop. They are just keen in giving the bill but not any result.

      Ride Quality & Handling

ride qualtiy is good of course if you can get it riding

      Final Words

if you are using the car other than for show and recreational purposes, I strongly advise you to put your money elsewhere.

      Areas of improvement

All over, the engine, gear box, A/C, Breaking system

Exterior Looking at a SUV is like meeting a guy who thinks he is a dude. There are two kinds of dudes:

      1. Whom you say hi and they immediately chill and break into a conversation - you might think of these as metrosexual

      2. Whom you say hi and the fellow replies back and befriends you, but slowly and you seem to mutually respect each other with slow progress. These are old boy, ladder frame SUVs that you need to respect to be respected back. Safari belongs here.

For a home grown SUV, its been a timeless clean and appealing design over the years and looks terrific even now. The new 2011 Safari's challange will not be to look as good as another vehicle but its predessecor.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Space, egronomics and features that a base model offers is very kind. However, the quality of plastics is quite basic. Hopefully that changes soon.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Toequey engine at about 130 horses, best driven at cruising speeds and even though the pick up is quite good in the Dicor, this is not enjoyed best at zipping speeds. Its a cruiser - period. And fuel economy is good. In city i get about 10 and I drove 3100kms cross country between Chandigarh and Chennai, the highway avearge was a fraction above 14.

Ride Quality & Handling Use a size bigger alloys on your new vehicle if you want to cut down body roll that a vehicle of this size cannot avoid. However, in linear acceleration and cornering it feels solidly planted. The steering is good at feedback though not too sharp and thankfully not too light. When you drive over 2 tonnes of steel and 130 horses, it cant be like your sporty hatchback, one has to watch the corners and best stick to responsible and not experimental driving.

Final Words My colleauges fondly call my vehicle "the truck". I have dealt with three different dealers, sometimes they may miss a thing or two but overall a sense of courtesy is in their dealings and while some bloggers here sound angry, i feel quite nice dealing with these folks. I appreciate the friendly charm of Joshi's in Chandigarh and the overall sense of warmth in VST in Chennai.

Areas of improvement I think the issue of plastics getting sorted in the new eidton. The only thing i wish they must incorporate is HID headlamps in the new car as the old one's lights need a little tweaking in the after sales market for full effectiveness. Secondly, from looks point of view, the spare wheel should remain where it is. I believe the new one has it under the belly which I say is not as macho as before.

Space, off roading ability, decent fuel economy, looksPlastics inside
