Dear Dodge Demon, if you think you are the only one boasting of eight second drag times, beware. But then, this is not what Chevrolet said when it unveiled the 2018 COPO Camaro. Built for the sole purpose of drag racing, the COPO Camaro is not street legal and for once, we are happy.
Because the COPO Camaro looks like it has just got back from a nearby custom shop. It has got those fancy racing stripes, beefier wheels and added aero. But don’t be fooled by it. Because underneath, the COPO is purpose-built. You get a choice of three engines – the 7.0-litre naturally aspirated, the 5.7-litre supercharged and the high-revving 5.0-litre - all of them V8s in the true muscle fashion.
While GM has not said what the 7.0-litre rumbler is capable of, they say, the 5.7-litre has clocked mid-8-second times as per NHRA standards. All thanks to the strengthened chassis, reworked suspension and a solid-axle in the back instead of the independent setup on the road-legal Camaro.
Fitted with a roll-cage from the factory itself, Chevrolet will sell only 69 of these Camaros every year. And we are sure a majority of them would end up in the air-conditioned garages of collectors and only very few of them would actually battle it out on the track.
