Audi will debut the new generation A7 on 19 October. The four-coupe will enter into its second generation now. The A7 has been spotted testing by our spy sleuths on many occasions already. Here is what we know so far about the new generation Audi A7.
New platform:
The second generation A7 will be based on the new MLB Evo platform. Introduced in 2012, MLB stands for Modularer Längsbaukasten, translating from German to "Modular Longitudinal Matrix". The architecture is a shared modular construction for longitudinal, front-engined vehicles. The A7 will share this platform with the new-gen A8, Q7, Cayenne and the Bentayga apart from the upcoming Lamborghini Urus and the Audi Q8. It will make the car lighter and more cost-effective.
Evolutionary design:
The new-gen A7 will adopt the evolutionary design cues from the A8 flagship sedan. The Audi Prologue Concept showcased at the 2014 LA Auto Show will also have a heavy influence over the A7 design. Expect the same cascading grille like in the A8 flanked by sleek LED headlights. The smooth flowing roofline which is characteristic to the A7 will be retained. The tail lights too will be akin to the LED strip as seen on the new A8.
Cabin:
The A7 boasts of Audi’s new Virtual Cockpit. There will be a host of passive and dynamic safety features as well. Expect a few of the A8’s autonomous techs to be trickled down the A7. The cabin will be roomier compared to the outgoing car. The extra over hangs will lend more bootspace for the Sportback. Being the bigger Audi, there will be a three-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, power seats and a large display screen for the fob-controlled infotainment system.
Powertrain:
There are no official details of the powertrain available as of now. However, we suspect the new gen A7 to be powered by the 1.8-litre TFSI petrol and the 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine. The same powertrain can be seen under the hood of the A8. Transmission would be a DSG automatic sending power either to the front wheels or all the four through the Quattro all-wheel-drive system. It won’t come as a surprise if the Four Rings offer the new A7 with an electrified powertrain. A performance S7 version is also on cards.
