Volkswagen has unveiled the latest generation Beetle in Shanghai on the eve of the city’s motor show, marking a new era in this iconic car’s history.  The latest generation moves away from design of the New Beetle of 1998 and instead draws on cues from the original and Beetle Ragster concept shown in Detroit in 2005.  As such it’s longer, wider and lower, giving a more masculine and dynamic appearance. 

Three trim levels will be available – Beetle, Design and Sport – and each will be endowed with its own individual character and features.  A wide range of innovative optional equipment will also be available, ranging from Keyless Access through satellite navigation systems and a panoramic sunroof to bi-xenon headlights and LED daytime running lights – all of which are available for the first time on a Beetle.

In the UK, a choice of four engines will be offered: three petrol – a 1.2-litre TSI 105 PS, a 1.4-litre TSI 160 PS and a 2.0-litre TSI 200 PS; and one diesel – a 1.6-litre 105 PS with BlueMotion Technology.The new car will be available to order in the UK in the summer, with first cars arriving in showrooms early in 2012.

Over 50 different cars will be on display during the course of this exhibition . The first few cars on display are - the 1956 Volkswagen Beetle, the 1972 Mercedes CE 250 Coupe and the 1952 Mark VII Jaguar. On December 12, a spectacular convoy of these classic and vintage cars will grace the roads through the ghats from Mumbai to Khandala.

Mexican President Felipe Calderón and Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann, member of the Board of Management of Volkswagen AG with responsibility for ‘Group Production’, opened a new section at the Puebla plant of Volkswagen de México. This is where the new Jetta will be built using state-of-the art manufacturing technology. The Group’s commitment in Mexico is part of its long-term growth strategy for North America. The Company is aiming to sell one million vehicles per year in the USA by 2018.

“Expansion of the Puebla plant is a major step towards the future for Volkswagen in Mexico. As a result, Puebla remains the main supplier of compact class vehicles in North America. Efficient production with high localization and new products tailored to the wishes of our North American customers will bring further growth momentum in Mexico,” Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann said. With an annual production capacity of 525,000 units, Puebla is now one of the largest car manufacturing plants in the Volkswagen Group.

Heizmann reiterated the Group’s plans to build a new engine plant as part of the growth strategy for North America: “The new plant is to supply our factories in Puebla and Chattanooga with the latest generation of engines from 2013. These engines will set the benchmark in terms of consumption and emissions.” The choice of location has not been finalized yet, but a decision will be taken soon. Mexico is one possible option.

Under Strategy 2018, it is planned to invest up to US$1 billion in Mexico over the next three years. Some of these funds will be spent on constructing new production plant for the Beetle successor. The new version of the style icon will be launched in 2011 and will safeguard a total of 2,000 jobs in Puebla.

The New Beetle is equipped with a 2.0 litre 4-cylinder petrol engine with an output of 115bhp at 5400rpm. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The New Beetle which comes equipped with 15“ alloy wheels, four airbags, ABS and ESP.

The Touareg develops 240bhp from 4000-4400rpm with the help of turbocharging from a 3-litre V6 TDI engine mated to a 6-speed DSG gearbox. The company claims a 0-100kph time of 7.8 seconds. The Touareg offers genuine leather seat upholstery and a 230V power socket in rear luggage compartment among the other things in the mile-long list of features. The vehicle also offers 45 degree hill climbing ability, 35 degree side slope angle and a wading depth of 500mm.

That proves we are present in the right market with the right products at the right time,” said Mr. Joerg Mueller, Volkswagen Group Chief Representative as well as President and Managing Director Volkswagen India Private Limited. Currently the three brands of the Group offer in total 15 different models, from the luxury sedan to the compact car.

Mueller further added, “We will soon be introducing new car models in India like the Volkswagen New Beetle and the Volkswagen Polo to enhance our presence in the market. At the same time our factory in Pune is ready for the start of production of the Polo which will be launched at the AutoExpo 2010 in New Delhi.”
