The Porsche 911 is ethereal. Since its inception in 1964, the easy to drive, everyday supercar has evolved with time but also has retained its essence like no one else. The Porsche 911 always manages to be amongst the fastest cars in the world while being practical to become a daily driver. In its more than 50 years of production, the 991 series introduced in 2012 is only the third entirely new platform. Porsche keeps on tweaking 911 every year, extracting more and more performance from its engine and chassis.

The 991 series Porsche 911 looks modern. The quad LED illumination in the blacked out headlamp looks classy. While the signature bug-eyed front has been carried over, it looks sleek with the wide horizontally slatted air dam and the LED daytime running lamps. The tail has become sharper with the lip spoiler brow over the LED tail lamps. The 991 series uses aluminium construction and hence despite being bigger in size than the outgoing 997, the 991 911 is lighter by almost 50kgs.

Thanks to the longer wheelbase and wider body, the interior space has improved for its two passengers. The dashboard is entirely new and now resembles the Porsche Panamera. The three-spoke steering wheel has a host of controls along with the paddle shifters. The three pod instrument cluster has the speedometer in the centre, the rev counter on the left and the MID on the other side. The touch screen music system has been embedded in the centre console along with the climate control fobs, the gear lever and the other electronic control buttons.

The Porsche 911 is available in different variants according to performance. The basic 911 Carrera is powered by a 3.0-litre boxer-6 turbocharged petrol engine generating 370bhp while the Carrera S gets 420bhp setup. The Carrera 4 and the Carrera 4S get four-wheel-drive along with the same engine options. The 911 Turbo and the Turbo S get the 3.8-litre boxer-6 turbo-petrol engines that develops 540bhp and 580bhp of power respectively. The Carrera comes with a seven-speed manual option while the 7-speed PDK is available across the range.

The Porsche 911 is a sub-five second car and fights it out with the Nissan GT-R, the Jaguar F-Type and the Maserati GT. The 911 Turbo manages to challenge the Ferrari 488 and the Lamborghini Huracan as well.
