    Mahindra KUV100 [2016-2017] K8 6 STR Review

A brilliant concept. Take one portion SUV crazed nation. Add a huge middle class to it. And then top it up with bad roads. And what you get is a desperate need for an SUV that is efficient, spacious, rugged and only as expensive as a hatchback. The Mahindra KUV100 is the answer to this need. At least on paper. It starts at Rs 4.42 lakh, comes with a claimed fuel economy of over 18kmpl (for the petrol), is tall and wide in order to liberate good interior room, and because it is a Mahindra, let’s assume, it is also rugged.

    What is it?

A brilliant concept. Take one portion SUV crazed nation. Add a huge middle class to it. And then top it up with bad roads. And what you get is a desperate need for an SUV that is efficient, spacious, rugged and only as expensive as a hatchback. The Mahindra KUV100 is the answer to this need. At least on paper. It starts at Rs 4.42 lakh, comes with a claimed fuel economy of over 18kmpl (for the petrol), is tall and wide in order to liberate good interior room, and because it is a Mahindra, let’s assume, it is also rugged.

Step into the real world though, and the KUV100’s styling is the first dampener. Yes, we know looks are subjective. And we know we are more grease monkeys than style critics. Even so, we can still tell a visually appealing design from an oddball one. And the KUV100 borders on the latter. It has the detailing, the cuts and creases, and some nice design touches. But, it is the proportions and the randomness of these elements coming together that leaves a lot to be desired.

But, where credit is due, the Mahindra KUV100 does offer buyers a whole range of choices. On CarWale for instance, we have listed 23 different variants for the KUV from diesel and petrol, to trims that range from K2 to K8 with some ‘plus’ variants thrown in. And it is the only car in its class to offer airbags as options on all trims and in fact, seating for six.

Our test KUV is a petrol, six seater in K8 trim.

How is it on the inside?

It’s pleasing with the variety of shades, textures, finishes and surfacing. There’s gloss, matte, dull and metal finishes, and lots of geometrical shapes as well. And it looks good in the photographs. The gloss and textured plastic all round looks upmarket but the dull plastic used for the aircon vents and the door opening latches on the inside look downright tacky. The satin silver finish is passable. The quality, the fit and finish and the operability, also isn’t great. There are roughly cut edges, loose fittings and an overall lack of finesse in the way the buttons, knobs and stalks work.

The KUV doesn’t score high on ergonomics either. From the uneven pedal positioning to the way the central armrest gets in the way of shifting gears to the large steering, the KUV isn’t one of those modern day cars that make you feel at home instantly. It will need to grow on you. Plus, the floating central console digs into the knee; the dead pedal is cumbersome to use; and the cup holders on the foldable armrest are too far back.

What we did like on the KUV100, however, is the all round room. The car measures less than 3.7 metres in length but even so, the kneeroom is very good. As is the head and shoulder room. And the seats are large and comfy. The rear one also gets adjustable headrests for all three passengers. In fact, in this class of cars, only the KUV can seat three adults in the rear in genuine comfort. As for the front, we’d recommend not to use the third seat for it simply doesn’t work. The height of the KUV in the meantime makes it a breeze to get in and out of.

And because the KUV100 is a Mahindra, it’s not short on features either. On the K8 we are driving, there’s ABS and dual front airbags. There’s also a Bluetooth enabled infotainment system (sans touchscreen though), mood lighting, height adjustable driver’s seat and keyless entry. It also gets puddle lamps, a gear indicator, electric ORVMs, and a cooled glovebox as well.

    How does it drive?

The Mahindra KUV100 feels and drives like an SUV. Which isn’t a compliment because the whole idea of doing a monocoque SUV (take the Duster or the EcoSport for instance) is to have something that looks butch, has good clearance but behaves like a car on the road. Plus, it feels inconsistent. Take the steering response or the gearshift quality or even the throttle response, not to mention the handling and ride quality, and the KUV lacks crispness, predictability and surefootedness of its hatchback counterparts like the Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Ford Figo.

The steering is vague and has too may turns lock to lock. The gearshift, though short throw, is notchy. And as far as ride is concerned, it’s quiet but unnecessarily jumpy. There’s also constant kickback from the steering over poor roads. It lacks that all-crushing ability we liked so much in the TUV. Handling isn’t the KUV’s forte either. It rolls, and when it stops rolling, it understeers. It’s not the most stable under braking either. ABS is standard on all variants – and thank god for that – because the KUV does move around with its rear wanting to overtake its front under hard braking.

The KUV100 we have here is the petrol, which uses Mahindra’s own all-aluminium engine. It’s a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder engine that gets variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust sides. It makes 82bhp and the torque at 115Nm is commendable. It is mated to a 5-speed gearbox and because it is a monocoque with a transverse engine, it’s also only front-wheel-drive.

Now here’s the surprise. On the road, the KUV is almost as quick as the Swift to 100kmph taking a little under 15 seconds to hit the mark. But that’s not all; it completely destroys the Swift when it comes to driveability. It is 3 seconds quicker in the 20-80kmph run (in 3rd gear) and almost 10 seconds faster in getting to 100kmph from 40kmh in 4th. And it’s only 8kmph down on top speed with the KUV maxing out at 156kmph (true speed).
This is partly down to the engine’s flat torque curve that peaks at 3,600rpm and to the KUV’s shorter gearing. The engine pulls well in the low and mid range but only comes on song past 4,000-4,500rpm. However, when it does, it sounds more like Altaf Raja than Sonu Nigam. It’s noisy, a bit vibey and it’s not one of those petrol engines you want to redline. In fact, the refinement levels all round need a relook on the KUV100.

    Why should I buy one?

Because we love SUVs. And the KUV100 is big on space (for its footprint). And it has comfy seats and good ingress. Lest we forget, it ticks the price and features boxes as well. And as our VBOX tests have showed, it’s no slouch when it comes to performance.

But as a well-engineered product, it offers little. The visibility isn’t great; it isn’t the easiest to manoeuvre; and the overall driving experience is closer to tedious than fun. And the build quality, ergonomics and dynamics need a serious rethink.

    Where does it fit in?

The Mahindra KUV100 might be unique, but for similar pricing, it has a bunch of competent competitors to deal with. It’s unique because of its high seating, and the butch and SUV-like proposition it brings to the table. But, if you have around Rs 6 lakh to spare, there are hatchbacks like the Swift and Figo that are more refined, better put together, and are both better and easier to drive than the KUV. It doesn’t mean the KUV won’t sell, it will, but more discerning car buyers might not lap it up.

        Specifications

        • Engine & Transmission

          • Engine
            1198 cc, 3 Cylinders Inline, 4 Valves/Cylinder, DOHC

Timely services will keep a motor efficient and in top shape.

          • Engine Type
            mFalcon G80 Pertol

The official title given by the manufacturer in terms of the name of the engine, the displacement and the number of cylinders.

A bigger displacement and more than four-cylinders generally indicate a performance-oriented engine.

          • Fuel Type
            Petrol

All cars in India either run on petrol, diesel, CNG, LPG or electric power.

          • Max Power (bhp@rpm)
            82 bhp @ 5500 rpm

Gives a good idea of the performance of the vehicle under full thrust. A higher figure here usually means a higher top speed as well.

Higher the power, the peppier the engine but it can also affect fuel economy.

          • Max Torque (Nm@rpm)
            115 Nm @ 3500 rpm

Relates to in-gear acceleration. A higher figure here means better roll-on acceleration, fewer gear shifts, and possibly better fuel efficiency.

The more torque at low RPM range makes the engine feel more responsive. It also allows the engine to run smoothly without too many gear changes.

          • Mileage (ARAI)
            18.14 kmpl

This is the maximum fuel efficiency that an engine gives. All numbers are provided by the manufacturer based on tests conducted and specified by the standards of the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India)

Such fuel efficiency attained while driving in special conditions makes it unlikely to get it in real-world conditions

          • Drivetrain
            FWD

Cars come with different drivetrain configurations depending on the segment.

Front-wheel drive (FWD) is most common in mainstream cars while expensive cars or SUVs come with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD).

          • Transmission
            Manual - 5 Gears

Type of transmission used to transfer power from the engine to the wheels

A manually operated transmission is the most popular type, thanks to its simplicity and low cost. Varied types of automatic transmissions are also available.

          • Others
            Idle Start/Stop
        • Dimensions & Weight

          • Length
            3675 mm

The length of the car decides its segment. In India, cars that are less than 4 metres in length enjoy reduced excise duties.

            Length
            • Length: 3675

Longer length results in more cabin space. It also adds to straight line stability.

          • Width
            1715 mm

A car's width is defined as its widest point without its mirrors.

            Width
            • Width: 1715

Although more width gives you more lateral space inside the cabin, it makes the car more difficult to park in narrow spots.

          • Height
            1655 mm

The height of the car denotes the highest point of the vehicle from the ground.

            Height
            • Height: 1655

Taller the car, the more headroom there is on offer inside the cabin. However, a tall boy stance also affect the car’s centre of gravity which can cause more body roll.

          • Wheelbase
            2385 mm

The space between the center of the front and rear wheels.

            Wheelbase
            • Wheelbase: 2385

The longer the wheelbase, the more space there is inside the cabin.

          • Ground Clearance
            170 mm

It’s the space between the lowest point of the car and the ground.

            Ground Clearance
            • Ground Clearance: 170

If the car has a good amount of clearance, it’s easier for it to clear big speed breakers and overall, deal with bad roads.

          • Kerb Weight
            1085 kg

The total weight of the vehicle with all the standard equipment and all the required fluids.

A lightweight car will always be more efficient and easier to manoeuvre whereas a heavy car would give you a sense of solidity while driving.

        • Capacity

          • Doors
            5 Doors

The number of doors define the category of car. For example – four door means sedan, two-door means coupe while five-doors usually refer to a hatchback, MPV or an SUV.

            Doors
            • Doors: 5
          • Seating Capacity
            6 Person

The number of people that can be seated comfortably in the car, which has also been mandated by the car manufacturer.

          • No of Rows
            2 Rows

Smaller cars usually have two rows which can seat five, but some SUVs and MPVs have three rows and can seat around 7-8 passengers.

          • Bootspace
            243 litres

Boot space defines how practical the car is with respect to how much luggage it can carry.

            Bootspace
            • Bootspace: 243

A boot with a large and wide opening is ideal for loading heavy items. Additionally, a lower loading height also makes it easy to put in luggage.

          • Fuel Tank Capacity
            35 litres

The official volume of the fuel tank of a car, usually denoted in litres.

If a car has a large fuel tank, it can cover long distances without refuelling.

        • Suspensions, Brakes, Steering & Tyres

          • Front Suspension
Independent McPherson Strut with Dual Path Mounts, Coil Spring and Hydraulic Gas Charged Shock Absorber

Almost all cars in India use an independent front suspension which is usually the MacPherson Strut type.

          • Rear Suspension
Semi-Independent Twist Beam with Coil Spring and Hydraulic Gas Charged Shock Absorber

The rear suspension can either be non-independent or independent.

Most of the budget cars have non-independent suspension while the more expensive ones get independent rear suspension which offers better bump absorption.

          • Front Brake Type
            Disc

Most of the vehicles sold in India get ventilated or non-ventilated disc brakes upfront.

            - The ventilated discs are more popular thanks to them providing better stopping power and it also works well in hot conditions.

          • Rear Brake Type
            Drum

In affordable cars, drums brakes are fitted at the rear as they are cost effective.

Disc setup at the rear is now getting more popular as cars are getting faster in the real world.

          • Minimum Turning Radius
            5.05 metres

The official kerb-to-kerb minimum radius a car takes to complete a 180-degree turn.

Shorter the turning radius, the lesser space you need to make a tight turn or to take a U-turn.

          • Steering Type
            Power assisted (Electric)

Almost all steering systems in cars today have an assist to help park them better at low speeds - these can be hydraulic, electro-hydraulic or electric.

          • Wheels
            Alloy Wheels

The wheels used on cars are either steel rims with plastic wheel cover hub or alloy wheels on higher spec models or expensive cars.

Razor cut, or diamond cut alloy wheel design are not getting more popular. Manufacturers usually offer these in top-end trim of their car models.

          • Spare Wheel
            Steel

Important in a country with varying quality of roads, spare wheels ensure one doesn’t get stranded when one of the main tyres gets damaged.

Select premium car models feature space savers (smaller than the stock wheels) to save on boot space.

          • Front Tyres

        • Please don't buy this car , if you are looking for a fuel efficient one
I am writing this review after 1.5 years and completing 15k kms. To be short and crisp to the point, If you want a stylish, SUV like hatchback just go for it, but if you are very concerned about the mileage and performance, pleae don't choose this car. I am owning K8 Petrol variant. Initially it was giving 8-9 kms in City and 10-11 kms in highway upto 1st service. Now after the 3rd service, even if we drive the car with mileage consciousness, by maintaining the Car AC in a standard mode, by maintaining the Speed, by checking the type pressure everytime when I take for a long drive, I could able to achieve 10-11 kms in city and 11-12 kms in highway. The company claimed mileage was 18kmpl. But my expectation was atleast it should give 15kms. But it can give only 11-12 kms. Mahindra gave a software update fix which is of no use, and if we complain regarding mileage issue to the service center guy, he will simply say that is our driving fault. The company is not ready to accept that it is their fault and they are blaming our driving style which is ridiculous. Now I am willing to sell my car, but no one will be ready to take it due to its very poor mileage. I lost my hard earled money.Driving comfort, front and rear space, 6th Seat, Exterior SUV like styling, short length of the carVery Bad Mileage, Noisy engine, Poor performance

        • KUV 1OO - Six month ownership experience
After a regular usage of this car, i am writing this review. In first look and ride we could not judge everything. Being a user of car for a long time you will come to know good/bad aspects of a car. Exterior The front of the car has very aggressive styling. But in my point of view the styling is over done in many of the areas. Being a very small in car in its segment (in terms of length), Mahindra has given lot of style curves to the body. When I look both front and rear separately it looks ok. But it has poor overall design when look as a complete car.  Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) One good point is mahindra has done good job of managing interior space well to provide good storage locations. The rear boot space looks higher only on paper, But in real while keep using I felt the space and dimension of luggage compartment is not adequate. It is also very similar to Beat. You cant even keep a big suitcase. Rear seat also suffers interms of space for 3 peoples, it is common in most of the hatchbacks, But still comparing to old Figo,i20 it is a problem. The car lacks in many features with  latest models, even top end modesl dont have keyless entry,No automatic AC control,No touch screen for audio,no express up/down for powoer windowsetc., The plastic quality also is not at par with other models. The dashboard look/design is not attractive when I go on day to day usage. The driver seat and co-driver seat is comfortable. It is good that at least we have height adjustment. But Mahindra also did same mistake what datsun GO did, There is no real very good reason/usage of six seater. I never had a sixth person in my car. Also it is dangerous to have sixth person in front row. Since it reduce my driving comfort also there is no safety. Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox The new petrol engine has very good power and pulling capacity in highways and hilly areas. But i think it is not tuned well to adopt, I am getting very poor mileage even in highways. Hardly ~10kmpl😢.  The gear shift/handling also I feel hard compared to my previous car (Figo). Since still Mahindra made this a very rough type since it is an UV.   Ride Quality & Handling The power steering is not adopting well at high speeds, I am still not getting good confident at high speeds. Being tall boy design and short wheel base I feel danger at high speeds. luckly Mahindra offered ABS in all models. I think this is the reason. Final Words In present market condition we have very good other models at the same price with lots of features with proven design. Areas of improvement   Engine performance, features, handling etc.,  1. Good idea of space utilization in given small dimension. 2. Good ground clearance1. Very poor fuel economy. 2. Very awkward design of interiors. 3. Bad final quality
