The Porsche Cayenne GTS has been the purest driver's SUV in the lineup, and Porsche has upped the oomph factor of the variant by adding 20PS to the current GTS's power output. There is also a lower final-drive ratio that helps increase acceleration times. However, fuel efficiency and emissions are taken care of by the stop-start system, which is standard. As is an eight-speed automatic transmission, which is a dampener for enthusiasts.

The outgoing GTS has a six-speed manual as standard, with the automatic an option. With the new one, there is no manual option at all - strange, for a car that claims to be so driver-focused that it eschews the ubiquitous turbocharger in favour of a purer driving experience. We only hope that Porsche's working hard at inserting that new seven-speed manual in the Cayenne GTS as we write this. Meanwhile, the automatic makes it to 100kph in 5.4 seconds. 

Among the new additions to the new GTS are new side skirts, wheel arches, unique 20-inch wheels and two new paint shades: one green, the other, red. You can also spec the GTS with the optional Sport Chrono Package and PDCC active anti-roll system for better performance. The interior is trimmed with alcantara, as befits a sporty model, and we expect it to go on sale in India as soon as right-hand drive models are produced.

The Panamera S Hybrid is powered by the same engine combination that has already proved itself in the Cayenne S Hybrid and that being the 3-litre V6 compressor engine. The power transmission is handled by the familiar eight-speed Tiptronic S fitted as standard in the Cayenne models with a wide spread of ratios.

The first models of the Panamera S Hybrid are expected to arrive in July 2011 for a basic retail price of 126,234 USD in the Gulf markets. We wait for the car to come to the Indian markets, it will take a few years and a few takers as well. If it comes to India it will be priced close to 80 or 90 lakh and will obviously cater to a niche crowd. If not the car we surely hope to see the technology trickle down to India.

With the opening of Porsche Centre New Delhi, Porsche is following its approach to set-up high-quality dealerships in India enabling the car manufacturer to offer its customers a high-end product with uncompromising service standards.

A. Q. Why is it that one often hears of delays when it comes to deliveries of Porsche cars?

A. Typically the time required is 100 days. However, back at our plant, we always manufacture one Porsche car less than the demand. We’ve figured out that this works well for us. We are not Ford or Tata and this is how we retain our exclusivity. Having said that, we know that India is primarily a chauffer-driven market and back in Germany, the company recognizes the fact that very often a customer is not willing to wait long before buying a vehicle.

Q. You’ve seen and probably driven the entire Porsche range. What is the one aspect that you find absolutely fascinating about the newly launched Cayenne?

A. The new Cayenne is brilliant on the tarmac but personally, if you ask me, I find the Cayenne’s off-roading capabilities truly remarkable. The handling characteristics of the new Cayenne have increased. It’s predecessor was a great car but this is something else! It really is.

Q. Is there a particular colour that is really popular when it comes to the Porsche cars worldwide?

A. Well black and red are really popular colours, however, now, white is a hugely popular colour across the world.

]]>A long awaited model has finally arrived. Precision Cars India, the official Porsche importer for India, unveils the second generation Porsche Cayenne at Porsche Centre Mumbai today. Speaking on the occasion, Deesch Papke, Managing Director of Porsche Middle East and Africa said, "The new Cayenne features a completely new exterior and newly defined luxury interior. Yet in today's world, it's clearly not enough to pour on more power; there must be a clear, simultaneous improvement in fuel consumption. We have optimized this objective to a maximum by reducing CO2 emissions of up to 26% and a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 23% less. This car clearly brings a new dimension to the SUV market."

As a premiere for the Porsche brand the Cayenne is offered as a hybrid version, the Cayenne S Hybrid. The car ensures fuel consumption of just 8.2 litres/100 kilometers with CO2 emissions of just 193 g/km. The Cayenne S Hybrid combines the performance of an eight-cylinder with the economy of a six-cylinder running on much less fuel.

All Cayenne vehicles offer more power on less fuel, greater efficiency and lower CO2 emissions. The fuel consumption is down by up to 23% compared to its predecessor.

The Cayenne S weighs180 kilos less than the earlier version and the lighter body weight did not prevent further improvements in product substance and an even higher standard of safety.

The wheelbase is now 40 mm longer. In all, the new Cayenne is 48 mm longer than its predecessor. The cockpit-like interior clearly derived from the Porsche Panamera, is now found in the new Cayenne with a centre console between the two front seats.  For maximum comfort also in the back, the rear seat bench now moves fore-and-aft by 160 millimetres, with the backrest angle adjusting to three different settings.

The range starts with the 3.6-litre V6 Cayenne with an increased engine power to 300 bhp. With its eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission fuel consumption is down from the former model by no less than 20 per cent to 9.9 ltr/100 km

Fuel efficiency is also up significantly on the Cayenne S with its 4.8-litre V8 power unit, in this case by 23 per cent to 10.5 litres/100 kilometres. At the same time the new engine delivers 400 bhp maximum output instead of the former 385 bhp.

The Cayenne Turbo, with its 500 bhp 4.8-litre V8 biturbo consumes just 11.5 ltr/100 km representing also a reduction in fuel consumption of 23 per cent.

The Cayenne S Hybrid focuses on maximum efficiency from the overall system. Depending on driving conditions, the vehicle operates with one drive unit by itself or with both drive units working together.

Ashish Chordia, Director, Porsche India, emphasized on the new features that meet the customer’s demand in the local market. "We are extremely proud to launch the new Cayenne. This model represents the perfect balance between elegant design, powerful driving dynamics and a high level of comfort. Despite all of this, efficiency has significantly improved making this model an outstanding trendsetter in its segment."

Sharing the news, Mr. Rod Wallace, Managing Director - Precision Cars India, said “The Cayenne Diesel is intended primarily for the European market but we saw a tremendous demand for the car from all over India.” 

As with any Porsche model, annual production is limited and we will have only 19 cars coming to India in 2009, added Mr. Wallace. From outside, the new model comes with the same looks and appearance as the Cayenne with its V6 gasoline engine. Displacing 3 litres, the extra-smooth and refined V6 power unit develops maximum output of 240bhp, sufficient for a top speed of 214 km/h with a torque of 550Nm at 2,000 rpm. The base price for the new Cayenne Diesel is INR 64,95,000 inclusive of the import duties and taxes.
