2021 Kia Sorento spotted testing on the Nurburgring

Although Kia updated the Sorento just last year, a recent spy shot of the next-generation model hints that a crossover is coming sooner than expected. The prototype still appears to be in the early stages of development at the moment as it was being put through its paces at the Nurburgring. 

As can be seen under the heavy camouflage, the new-gen model will give up the curvy design of the current model and adopt a boxier shape akin to the Telluride. Even though the headlights and taillights seem to be rudimentary, the blacked-out wheels look production-ready. The overall shape of the SUV appears to have been reworked, but the oddly shaped window area remains the same as the current model. Overall, the new-gen Sorento should look more handsome and appealing than the model it replaces. 

It is too early to predict what changes the new-gen model will come with in terms of styling, but we do expect a thoroughly new cabin. There should be new features as well as added comfort for the three-rows. This should include an all-digital instrument cluster, larger infotainment system, new buttons and controls along with high-quality materials all around the cabin.

Under the hood, it is uncertain what new engine options will be offered. But Kia will surely continue to offer the 3.3-litre V6 and the smaller 2.4-litre four-cylinder engines as the current model. However, it won’t come as a surprise if the Korean carmaker offers a plugin hybrid or an all-electric powertrain with the next generation Sorento. 

The new-generation model is expected to arrive in 2021. But an almost production-ready prototype being tested on the ‘Ring means the official reveal could be earlier than expected. More details about the new-gen Sorento will be revealed soon. So stay tuned to CarWale.
