Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) is the largest automobile manufacturer in South Asia. Earlier known as Maruti Udyog Limited (till 2007), the company was responsible for the automobile revolution in India. Maruti started production in India in 1983 with its first car- the Maruti 800. The company spread its wings throughout the country and is one of the few publicly listed automotive companies in our country.
Maruti currently has two operational units in Gurgaon and Manesar near Delhi and is further expected to expand its operations with a new facility in Gujarat. Maruti Suzuki's Gurgaon facility has an installed capacity of 3,50,000 units per annum (per shift) and produces close to 9,00,000 units annually. The Alto, WagonR, Omni, Gypsy, and Eeco are manufactured here.
The Manesar facilities which became operational in February 2007 comprise a vehicle assembly plant with a capacity of 5,50,000 units per annum. The Swift, Swift DZire, SX4, Ritz and Celerio are produced here. The Suzuki powertrain plant is also a part of the same campus and supplies engines and transmissions to all the Maruti diesel vehicles. The Manesar and Gurgaon facilities have a combined capacity to produce over 14,50,000 units annually.
The company has competitors but it still manages to hold over 40 per cent share in the passenger car market. MSIL is also the third largest passenger car exporter in India after Hyundai and Nissan, exporting mainly to the African and European countries.
The company’s bread and butter segment still remains the small car segment with cars under four-metres being the volume generators. The manufacturer has the most dealerships and service stations across India.
As part of its corporate social responsibility Maruti Suzuki launched the Maruti Driving School in Delhi. Later the services were extended to other cities of India as well. Besides this, the company also offers finance and Insurance options to their customers and also has Maruti True value, a brand for pre-owned cars.
