Mahindra & Mahindra Limited was a company set up in 1945 in Ludhiana as Mahindra and Mohammed. Post partition when Malik Ghulam Muhammad returned to Pakistan, the company was renamed Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) in 1948. The company deals in farm equipment, financial services, trade and logistics, automotive components, after-market, IT and infrastructure.

M&M grew from being a maker of army vehicles to a major automobile and tractor manufacturer. It has acquired plants in China and the United Kingdom and the US and has partnerships with international companies like Renault SA and International Truck and Engine Corporation. It currently has automotive manufacturing facilities in Chakan, Nashik and Haridwar. M&M also designs, develops, manufactures and markets tractors as well as farm implements and has held on to the position of the world’s leading tractor brand for some years now.

Mahindra ventured into utility vehicle manufacturing in India with the iconic Willys Jeep, which was assembled here under licence. The company later branched out into manufacturing light commercial vehicles and returned to utility vehicle manufacturing after the deregulation of 1991.

The Mahindra Bolero was the spiritual successor to the popular Armada and has been one of the company’s most successful vehicles. Known for its rugged nature, the Bolero has been a consistent performer since its launch, with a major chunk of the sales come from the rural market. The Mahindra Scorpio hit the Indian markets in 2002 and its success saw the car enjoy a cult status in the country. While Mahindra has been making utility vehicle for many years, it made its entry into the passenger car segment only in 2007 with the Logan, which was a result of the company’s joint venture with Renault. While the joint venture was mutually broken off a while ago, the company continues to sell the Logan as the Verito and a hatchback variant, called the Verito Vibe. The Thar and XUV500 are two other Mahindra vehicles, which have fostered the company’s image as a remarkable utility vehicle manufacturer.

The company acquired a majority stake in Kinetic Motors in 2008, marking its entry into the two-wheeler industry. In 2011, Mahindra acquired the Korean SUV manufacturer, Ssangyong Motor Company. Mahindra also has a controlling stake in the Indian electric vehicle manufacturer, Reva and sells the country’s only electric vehicle, the e2O. The manufacturer has showcased numerous electic concepts, showing its commitment towards the development of electric vehicles.
