Slow down! School ahead!!

Chaotic school zones with clogged roads can be the stuff of nightmares for a driver

Always expect the unexpected near schools. Unfortunately, this is one chaotic zone that makes tackling traffic jams during rush hour look like a breeze. Children might cross the street at the wrong place, or suddenly run in front of your car. The secret to tackling these situations is to be calm and courteous. Remember, parents who are running late may suddenly need to get back into traffic after dropping the children off. Go easy on them.

Avoid travelling faster than 30kmph, and travel even slower if there are a number of children along the road or are crossing the road. Be predictable and don’t make sudden manoeuvres that others, particularly children, won’t be expecting.

Always stay alert. Put down the mobile phone, and put both hands on the wheel as you need total control of the car. Avoid distractions within your vehicle, including loud music. Yield the right of way to pedestrians. It isn’t just courteous, it’s the law. Stop in either direction for a school bus with its lights flashing. If the bus is outfitted with flashing yellow lights, anticipate it will soon stop and children may be crossing in front of you.

While going by bus

  • Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street.
  • Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop, then board.
  • Exit the bus and quickly step away from it. The driver can see you best when you are away from the bus.
  • Never cross the street in front of the bus. Never board at a red light or at an unauthorised bus stop.
  • Do not put any part of your body outside a moving or even stationary bus.
  • Always hold on to the handrail.

    Tips For Teachers

    • Children come to school in various modes of transport. Teachers should ensure that they enter and leave the school safely. Always.
    • Children should be supervised and taken care of when alighting from and boarding the bus.
    • Children in the school bus must be accompanied by a teacher.
    • A teacher should arrange for an alternate bus and keep children together if the school bus fails to arrive or if there is any other problem.

Tips For Parents and Other Motorists

    • Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks. Crosswalks exist at all intersections even if unmarked.
    • Parents must ensure that children acquire the right knowledge and skills for safe use of roads. They should teach their children the basic rules of the road, how to walk and cross the road, how to alight and board a bus, etc.
    • Parents shouldn't allow minor children to sit in the front seat.
    • Children are very good observers and therefore, parents must set an example by meticulously observing all traffic rules at all times.
