    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe [2017-2020] 43 AMG [2017-2019] Review

SUVs have caught everybody’s fancy these days thanks to their high driving position and immense road presence. But even amongst them is a niche group who not only want their high riders to look sporty, but also have the necessary performance to put sport cars to shame. And Mercedes-Benz has come out with just such a product and it’s called the GLC 43 AMG Coupe.

    What is it?

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe 43 AMG

    Why would I buy it?

For its unique appearance and fabulous engine

    Why would I avoid it?

Not adequately tech-laden for its price and ride isn't the most comfortable

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe 43 AMG

    What is it?

SUVs have caught everybody’s fancy these days thanks to their high driving position and immense road presence. But even amongst them is a niche group who not only want their high riders to look sporty, but also have the necessary performance to put sport cars to shame. And Mercedes-Benz has come out with just such a product and it’s called the GLC 43 AMG Coupe.

Now it might not be to everyone’s liking, but to my eyes the GLC Coupe has struck the right balance between looking unique while not seeming out of proportion when viewed from most angles. The diamond grille and chiseled front bumper add flair, but it’s the Affalterbach alloy wheels that stand out and give the car a sporty presence. On the other hand, it’s from the rear that this coupe-SUV looks really alluring as the sloping roofline ends in a bulging spoiler and tailgate with striking LED tail lamps. It gives the car a very sporty stance.

How is it on the inside?

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe 43 AMG

Mercedes-Benz hasn't affected many updates to the vehicle’s interiors, inherited from the GLC SUV. That said, it's still not dull to look at. In fact, the black interiors with red accents look more interesting than the beige cabin in the standard car. It still remains a well-built cabin and, of course, looks and feels luxurious too. Despite the sloping roofline, the GLC Coupe remains a comfortable four-seater, with adequate headroom even for six footers. On the downside, the tapering roof affects rearward visibility, as the C pillars are thick and rear glass is tiny. Front visibility is good, but again the thick A-pillar obstructs view especially in corners or at busy junctions.

Even so, we like the cabin overall for being airy with exceptional fit and finish. There’s lots of leather, stowage places and it gets a fair selection of cup and bottle holders too. Equipment wise it’s a bit of a mixed bag. You don’t get stuff like keyless-go, a touch screen system and auto parking function which has become a norm even in cars that costs half as much. Other than these, you get a car that is fairly loaded with kit like a sweet sounding Burmester music system, electric front seats with memory function, automatic LED headlamps and wipers, mood lighting and a sunroof. Furthermore, there’s cruise control with speed limiter and a 360 camera with proximity sensors front and back. On the safety front, the vehicle gets seven airbags, ABS and ESP among others.

    How does it drive?

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe 43 AMG

Now let’s come to the bit that is important! – does it justify the AMG badge? On paper, it has lot of potential as it comes powered by a 3.0-litre V6 bi-turbo petrol mill under the hood that produces a healthy 367bhp and a humongous 520Nm of torque. The snarly exhaust note keeps reminding you of the car’s racy nature. It isn’t as loud as a V8, but it’s still good enough to paste a smile on your face. And, for a car that weighs in excess of 1.8 tonnes, this V6 engine easily pushes the tachometer needle from idle to near redline(6,500rpm) without a hiccup. In our acceleration tests, the GLC43 AMG hit 100kmph from standstill in just under 5 seconds.

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe 43 AMG

The throttle response is impressive whichever mode you are in. The car feels quick even in the Comfort mode, while it gets dramatic in the Sport+ mode. The instantaneous power delivery in the latter mode makes it feel a bit jerky though. So we stuck to the sport mode for some spirited driving. And boy, we were not let down. The nine-speed transmission that flows power through all wheels is one gem of a gearbox. Its super quick and smooth while changing gears on its own, or even when you use paddle shifters. It’s only in the eco and comfort mode that you will feel a tiny bit of hesitation as you depress the pedal.

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe 43 AMG

Even the handling is good enough to back this impressive motor. The steering feels nicely weighted at high speeds, but a tad over-assisted at low speeds. Nonetheless, sport and sport+ modes reward with a sharper steering response. Also, less than two and a half turn lock-to-lock means the steering feels effortless, whether it be while parking this big SUV effortlessly or while carving up a mountain road. Even the 4WD is well calibrated and instead of giving lot of understeer, more power is sent to the rear wheels, thus making it feel as neutral as possible. It’s not perfect though. Despite Mercedes trying hard, it feels heavy when pushed hard into corners and it struggles in quick directional changes. Its brakes felt adequate, but more stopping power would have been welcome considering this SUVs pace.

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe 43 AMG

Now, on to the suspension set-up. Despite the air springs all around, the ride on this GLC43 isn’t very comfortable. Being an AMG, it’s on the stiff end of the stick. Sure, it feels stable and has a flat ride, but at the same time suspension is noisy and not all that comfortable for an everyday drive. Of course, it manages to iron out the bumps and smaller potholes, yet it's not the happiest taking on sharp edged ones.

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe 43 AMG

    Should I buy one?

    Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe 43 AMG

The GLC 43 AMG Coupe impresses not only in terms of its styling, but also because of its engine and driving characteristics. Still, with at an ex-showroom price of Rs 77.42 lakhs, it comes across as an expensive proposition. Especially, when other cars in this price bracket are more tech-laden. Also, despite being spacious, it doesn’t make for a very comfortable ride. However, if you are looking to buy something that looks a little different, is powerful, fast and drives well, the GLC 43 AMG is worth considering. And if you want that right mix of sportiness combined with ruggedness and utility, then the GLC 43 Coupe should be on your shortlist.

    Where does it fit in?

Presently, there is no direct competitor to the GLC 43 AMG in India. However, BMW X4 could be one if it were launched in the country! Otherwise, the Porsche Macan and the Jaguar F-Pace inch fairly close in terms of pricing.

        Specifications

        • Engine & Transmission

          • Engine
            2996 cc, 6 Cylinders In V Shape, 4 Valves/Cylinder, DOHC

Timely services will keep a motor efficient and in top shape.

          • Fuel Type
            Petrol

All cars in India either run on petrol, diesel, CNG, LPG or electric power.

          • Max Power (bhp@rpm)
            362 bhp @ 5500 rpm

Gives a good idea of the performance of the vehicle under full thrust. A higher figure here usually means a higher top speed as well.

Higher the power, the peppier the engine but it can also affect fuel economy.

          • Max Torque (Nm@rpm)
            520 Nm @ 2000 rpm

Relates to in-gear acceleration. A higher figure here means better roll-on acceleration, fewer gear shifts, and possibly better fuel efficiency.

The more torque at low RPM range makes the engine feel more responsive. It also allows the engine to run smoothly without too many gear changes.

          • Drivetrain
            RWD

Cars come with different drivetrain configurations depending on the segment.

Front-wheel drive (FWD) is most common in mainstream cars while expensive cars or SUVs come with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD).

          • Transmission
Automatic - 9 Gears, Paddle Shift, Sport Mode

Type of transmission used to transfer power from the engine to the wheels

A manually operated transmission is the most popular type, thanks to its simplicity and low cost. Varied types of automatic transmissions are also available.

          • Emission Standard
            BS 4

Set by the Indian Government, this governs the amount of air pollutants released by cars to make the atmosphere safer for humans.

          • Turbocharger / Supercharger
            Twin Turbo

Manufacturers today offer turbochargers to boost engine power without affecting its fuel economy. Superchargers are found in more expensive cars but on the downside, they are not very efficient.

Turbochargers are more effective but require plenty of heat management. Superchargers, meanwhile, offer linear bump in power but they are comparatively more complex.

          • Others
            Idle Start/Stop
        • Dimensions & Weight

          • Length
            4727 mm

The length of the car decides its segment. In India, cars that are less than 4 metres in length enjoy reduced excise duties.

            Length
            • Length: 4727

Longer length results in more cabin space. It also adds to straight line stability.

          • Width
            2095 mm

A car's width is defined as its widest point without its mirrors.

            Width
            • Width: 2095

Although more width gives you more lateral space inside the cabin, it makes the car more difficult to park in narrow spots.

          • Height
            1628 mm

The height of the car denotes the highest point of the vehicle from the ground.

            Height
            • Height: 1628

Taller the car, the more headroom there is on offer inside the cabin. However, a tall boy stance also affect the car’s centre of gravity which can cause more body roll.

          • Wheelbase
            2873 mm

The space between the center of the front and rear wheels.

            Wheelbase
            • Wheelbase: 2873

The longer the wheelbase, the more space there is inside the cabin.

          • Kerb Weight
            1880 kg

The total weight of the vehicle with all the standard equipment and all the required fluids.

A lightweight car will always be more efficient and easier to manoeuvre whereas a heavy car would give you a sense of solidity while driving.

        • Capacity

          • Doors
            4 Doors

The number of doors define the category of car. For example – four door means sedan, two-door means coupe while five-doors usually refer to a hatchback, MPV or an SUV.

            Doors
            • Doors: 4
          • Seating Capacity
            4 Person

The number of people that can be seated comfortably in the car, which has also been mandated by the car manufacturer.

          • No of Rows
            2 Rows

Smaller cars usually have two rows which can seat five, but some SUVs and MPVs have three rows and can seat around 7-8 passengers.

          • Fuel Tank Capacity
            66 litres

The official volume of the fuel tank of a car, usually denoted in litres.

If a car has a large fuel tank, it can cover long distances without refuelling.

        • Suspensions, Brakes, Steering & Tyres

          • Front Suspension
3-link suspension with Tubular torsion Barand coil spring with double-tube gas pressure

Almost all cars in India use an independent front suspension which is usually the MacPherson Strut type.

          • Rear Suspension
MB Multi-linkindependent suspension with Torsion bar and coil spring with single-tube gas pressure

The rear suspension can either be non-independent or independent.

Most of the budget cars have non-independent suspension while the more expensive ones get independent rear suspension which offers better bump absorption.

          • Front Brake Type
            Disc

Most of the vehicles sold in India get ventilated or non-ventilated disc brakes upfront.

            - The ventilated discs are more popular thanks to them providing better stopping power and it also works well in hot conditions.

          • Rear Brake Type
            Disc

In affordable cars, drums brakes are fitted at the rear as they are cost effective.

Disc setup at the rear is now getting more popular as cars are getting faster in the real world.

          • Minimum Turning Radius
            5.85 metres

The official kerb-to-kerb minimum radius a car takes to complete a 180-degree turn.

Shorter the turning radius, the lesser space you need to make a tight turn or to take a U-turn.

          • Steering Type
            Power assisted (Electric)

Almost all steering systems in cars today have an assist to help park them better at low speeds - these can be hydraulic, electro-hydraulic or electric.

          • Wheels
            Alloy Wheels

The wheels used on cars are either steel rims with plastic wheel cover hub or alloy wheels on higher spec models or expensive cars.

Razor cut, or diamond cut alloy wheel design are not getting more popular. Manufacturers usually offer these in top-end trim of their car models.

          • Spare Wheel
            Alloy

Important in a country with varying quality of roads, spare wheels ensure one doesn’t get stranded when one of the main tyres gets damaged.

Select premium car models feature space savers (smaller than the stock wheels) to save on boot space.

          • Front Tyres
