MG Hector vs Tata Harrier

Two mid-size SUVs powered by the same Fiat-sourced 2.0-litre engine, but in a different state of tune. Well, you must have already guessed that we are talking about the MG Hector and the Tata Harrier. And if that's so, it’s highly likely that you must be very well acquainted with these SUVs as well by now. For the uninitiated, yes both these SUVs are different products from different manufacturers, but are powered by a 1,956cc Multijet diesel engine built by Fiat. This motor comes mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. And back when we tested these, the one in the Harrier was tuned to churn out 140bhp unlike the more powerful Hector’s 170bhp. However, the torque output was the same at 350Nm. Here's how they performed against the clock in our V-Box tests.

There are quite a lot of contenders now in the mid-sized SUV segment in India. We take you back to the time when we pitted the Tata Harrier against the MG Hector to know which one was better. Though both these front-wheel driven SUVs derive power from FCA’s 2.0-litre diesel mill, both were then tuned to put out a different power output. Both were mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, but the Harrier's Kyrotec engine churned out 140bhp and 350Nm of torque. On the other hand, the Hector's diesel motor pumped out 170bhp of power and same amount of torque. Let's take a look at the real-world fuel efficiency figures we obtained during our testing cycle.

The Tata Harrier SUV had been the talk of the town for quite some time. After all, its OMEGA Arc platform is derived from Land Rover’s D8 architecture that also underpins many Range Rover models. Interestingly, the Harrier managed to deliver what was expected in terms of design, space, features, driving dynamics and more. Now, Morris Garages (MG), a British automotive brand has started its innings in India with the Hector. Does this heavily localised version have in it what it needs to be a viable alternative in this five-seater mid-size SUV segment? We find out.

Think Tata Harrier, and I bet the first thing that comes to your mind is a true-blue SUV with immense road presence that simply loves to flaunt its gorgeous curves. Come 2020, and the Tata Harrier is now not just BS6 compliant with about 30bhp more, it also boasts of an automatic gearbox version with additional equipment. For now, this automatic has got serious competition from the Kia Seltos, Hyundai Creta, and the Jeep Compass.
