Bentley Continental GTC Review
The Continental GTC is Bentley’s two door convertible model based on the GT coupe. It takes cues from its coupe sibling which debuted in 2010. While the original GTC was first presented back in 2005, the existing model featuring a host of upgrades was revealed in 2012.
While the original Continental GTC was considered much understated, the assertive stance of the new model delivers a more contemporary and muscular presence. Many of the GT's signature styling cues have been carried onto the Continental GTC. The typical Bentley matrix grille is framed by a striking headlight design, in traditional four-lamp format, with jewel-like detailing including LED daytime-running lights.
The three-layer fabric roof is available in eight colours. Folding and rising in about 25 seconds, the roof can be operational during speeds of up to 32kmph. Standard features include a heated glass rear window and reading light in the liner and when the roof is down, the heating/ventilation system automatically adjusts air distribution and volume accordingly.
The four-seater convertible features a sumptuous hand-crafted cabin, with soft-touch leather hides, an extensive range of wood veneers and deep-pile carpets. Bentley says that it has improved seat comfort and support over the previous model through the use of new multi-layer foams. The GTC features an advanced in-car infotainment systems backed by a 30GB on-board hard drive. The system includes an eight-inch screen display for the car's audio, telephone, ride and comfort functionality.
Bentley claims the GTC is engineered to provide unrivalled levels of interior quietness. The vehicle features new glass interlayers, underbody sheets and wheel-arch liners, all designed and acoustically tuned to produce minimal road noise.
Engine and Gearbox
Beating at the heart of the GTC is Bentley's 6-litre W12 twin-turbo petrol engine, uprated to produce 575bhp of power and 700Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed transmission from the Continental Supersports which halves shift times to just 200 milliseconds. The GTC, like all Bentleys, gets a permanent all-wheel-drive system. Thanks to the all-wheel-drive traction and the quick shifting gearbox, the GTC can hit zero to 100kmph in 4.5 seconds and go on to a top speed of 314 kmph.
Also developed from the Supersports is the 40:60 rear torque bias for the all-wheel drive system instead of the 50:50 set-up of the original Continental GTC. This minimises understeer during hard cornering.
Sold as a supremely luxurious four-seater convertible, the Bentley Continental GTC has no real competition in the Indian market. Although on pricing, the car is up against Ferrari’s V8 powered hardtop convertible model – the California.
