Before I proceed I would like to mention that I read almost all reviews & watched all videos of Rexton of all generations across worldwide websites and not just on indian websites. Offcourse my first choice was Fortuner but thanks to its long waiting period that gave me the chance to drive Rexton inbetween and changed my decision forever. Also I took testdrive 4 times of both vehicles before concluding RX7 as my SUV. Also the Price was never a factor for me to chose Rexton above Fortuner but it does play improtant part if we start comparing the features of both SUVs

Look and Style   There is no doubt that RX7 is one of the best looking SUVs available as of today. If you compare it with Fortuner, Captiva or SantaFe I may only consider Fortuner as the only competitor however I chose RX7 coz in my city (Gurgaon, Haryana) every second SUV is Fortuner and I am really sick of its looks, secondly Rexton may not look aggresive like Fortuner but its bigger than fortuner & more subtle lines & chrome unlike flashy chromes of fortuner, thats the only reason RX7 gets all head turns towards it by all Audi,BMW & Fortuner owners offcourse. LED Lines on headlamp & Tail Lamp make it look extremely stylish at night. I got myself Black color which indeed suits this SUV really well. The INTERIORS are loaded with features, its better if you go to the rexton website and go through them and I will mention the remaining features at the end of this review. My wife travels alot in Innova as her company's transport facility and when we went for the test drive of Fortuner she could barely make any difference on interiors (No offense to Fortuner owners) and She always wanted me to buy Audi Q3 just because of the Looks & Interiors however My Idea to buy RX7 was to have a really SUV with good space.

Comfort  It can surely beat any SUV in comfort factor as it has excellent suspension though sometimes you feel they are really soft however I tried this SUV on Jimcorbett jungle drives and it supported really well and trust I didnt have to do much to control it as AWD and excellent suspension did excellent job. Alll Leather seats are extremely comfortable better than any SUV I have driven so far including BMW X1 which was terrible on a road trip. Yes If we talk about Braking it is very powerful however the soft suspension pushes little infront that makes you feel that brakes are not effective but in reality the brakes are excellent and you actually start enjoying that push once you get use to this SUV.

Pickup  The only question that kept till the end in my mind after every test drive was the pick up better from its competitors or shoudl I consider 8 seconds time for the total pickup time as it was an AT Diesel. The pick up isnt great for 1-2 seconds however it picks up really well in next couple of seconds. However if you are in hurry Than switching to MANUAL Mode takes care of that. This is one feature that can really fun if you wanna zip zap on Indian roads. You can switch gears like Playstation on your steering and have fun while beating others. Its not highlighted by company on their website but it does bring alot of fun to this SUV

Mileage I wont talk much about Mileage as the first service is due on completing 10000KMs which is kind of dropback in their service manual. So far i am getting 7-8 in City and 10-11 on highways and in high

Best Features  Countless however Mine Favs are Big Sunroof, Memorized Auto Seats ( Not just memorizes it when turn off the car it auto lands backwards to let you get out & in thats simply amazing) Manual Gear Mode, Super Advanced Cruise Control that can be set on incline/decline mode, you can speed up without touching your pedal..dont need to set the speed again even when you stop completely just cross 40 press the Cruizecontrol and it takes you back to the top speed you set..Highfi audio system..Freaking Automatic control for every setting you can think off..

Once again there is no comparison when it comes to features with Fortuner or any other SUV..

Having said all this .. This review is Seriously for Automatic Buyers..if you are looking for Manual drive SUV look for some other review..You cant beat fortuner manual with Rexton Manual.. So if you want an AT AWD like AN AUDI or BMW..with all features.. go for Rexton RX7..

Needs to improve  Car keys..Old model keys..Should have been a foldable key or  I should say keyless start stop would have been there..but not a big trouble as such

Overall Experience So far amazing..Once I cross 10K Kms would again review..

      Countless Auto FeaturesMissing keyless..start-stop

It is day  3 of my  car REXTON RX 7 AT. Engine is very noisy, lousy, maruti 800 can pickup faster (I m user of automatic version). Ac is unreliable, after sales service support is poor. 24x7 assisstance is total fraud. My AC suddenly stopped working on highway barely after running 120 kms. No assistance recieved, had to come back. Pl dont waste your money buying this product. Suspension is not upto the mark, softness is missing. Mahindras badly need to review the AC, and slugishness of this product, if they want to retain their name, looks are good otherwise both exterior and interior. navigation software of mahindra xuv500 is better than this "premier car" of mahindra. dealer network also needs to be strengthend. Very few people are trained about this car. Think thrice before buying than to repent later. Dealer refused to provide contacts of any senior person of mahindra, their website also has no provision for customer greivances.

      Looks.Bad AC, POOR pickup

I have owned my Rexton for approximately a year. Initial impressions are that it is very comfortable, solid, smooth, refined and nimble . The suspension copes well with all surfaces and handling is excellent for a large vehicle. Seats are comfortable and the driving position and general ergonomics are very good. We test drove the main competitors and came to the conclusion that the Rexton performed better in most key performance criteria (for me this was mechanical refinement, ride, handling and standard of finish) and was unbeatable in value for money criterion. I test drove a Rs.31 lacs ( On road)Pajero and in my opinion there is little difference in general performance. At sub Rs.25 Lacs ( On road)it is an exceptional vehicle and has the balance and poise of a substantially more expensive vehicle.
The only thing holding back sales of this vehicle is poor or non-existent promotion and marketing and unjustified consumer and 'journalistic' prejudice. Do yourself a favour and test drive with an open mind, you may be surprised.Mahindra guys please wake up.

Engine is a dream; smooth, powerful and efficient - great towing vehicle. Very competent at high speed and overtaking. Excellent handling and maneuverability along with a lack of rattles and solid off-raod performance.

Exterior Very nicely finished and the shape is not butch like other SUVs in class, it actually is quite elegant.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Good space in front, rear is OK, third row is not for long haul. Seats are well finsihed but the leather should have darker color for dusty India.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Engine is the smoothest and quietest in its class, one of the reasons we rejected Fortuner and Pajero. Its power delivery is excellent compared to the other contenders. The automatic box that many criticize as being slow is actually very smart and not prone to hyper shifts like in others. Also there are no jerks felt during shift process unlike in the Fortuner.

Ride Quality & Handling Another plus for India, the ride over basic pot holed Indian roads is way better than others, especially over truck like skittish Fortuner. However the suspension spring rates need to be stiffer for off roads as they tend to sag early.

Final Words Excellent value for money, elegant looks and engine with heart of GOLD. No other engine in its classapproaches the surge that this one gives.

Areas of improvement Mahindra needs a separate showroom with educated sales crew to market this. You can't bundle the Bolero buyer with the Rexton one. Same goes for Mahindra's pathetic service units which are crowded with Bolero trucks, Scorpio taxis etc. Also Mahindra needs serious revamp and training for crew handling Rexton.

Exterior Just awesome. Got my RX7 around 20 days back. Its a real head turner on the road. Great looks and no unnecessary and ugly nostrils on the bonnet.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Best in this segment. I have evaluated Fortuner, Pajero, Endeavour and Captiva. It has the best features. Loved the easy access feature. The moment you take the key out from ignition, the seat rolls back and lower for the driver to go out or enter easy. The memory function brings not only the seat to the drivers preferred position, but also adjusts the two side rear view mirrors accordingly. Loved the Sunroof. You can keep the wndows up and open the sunroof to avoid your hairs going messy. I have installed a rearview camera and parking is so much more fun and easy. Enough space in the seond row and third row is quite low for an adult to sit. However I am not too happy with the third row of any other in this segment. Vanity mirror overhead comes with built in light, great help actually. One tough Window roll up at the driver side is of great help too, specially after paying toll tax or parking ticket. Headlight leveler is quite effective and makes a difference. Entertainment system is great. The manual peddle shift gear is quite interesting, though I need to understand more on how to use this. Tried to shifting to 5th gear quite fast and the car still behaved as if there is no strain to pick up. Wanted to be careful so as to avoid any shock to the engine and hence did not try that much. Overall interior has quite a rich look and feel.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Engine is smooth and picks up very fast. From standing still state if you press the accelerator, for about 0.5 second nothing happens but post that it picks up like a rocket. so one needs to be careful while managing that momentum. One thing which could be improved is the roar from the engine when you accelerate from a lower speed. Engines roars and it feels like the vehicle is racing in first gear. I tried doing that with manual peddle shift as well but no luck. But if you release the accelerator peddle after racing a bit, the engine feels like butter while maintaining the speed. This confuses me quite a bit. I am suspecting that the roaring noise comes from radiator fan. Shown it to the service station guy as well, but not sure how well are they trained. I hope by the time I reach 10k km, these guys will be trained enough to address my queries.

Fule Economy does not seem to be great. But how much shall we expect from an SUV of that size! I guess its giving me around 8km/ltr with mixed 30% Highway and 70% city driving. Is it due to the AT and has any linkage to the engine roar I mentioned above? Not sure. However my friend driving Fortuner and Captiva says they get 10kmpl. Not sure whether they measure it right.

Gear is smooth and great! No jerks but the trasmission rate for higher shift may be little sluggish.

Ride Quality & Handling Ride quality is out of the world. Smooth and terrific pick up except the first 0.5-1 second. Handling is almost like sedan. I have taken narrow U turns in busy road and no issues. Handbrake is little far off, as if the co-passenger is going to apply that. The car front dives a bit while appling brakes but not a major issue. Bound to happen with that momentum.

Final Words A great vehicle and real value for money. Even after paying another 5lakhs I was not getting same features. Love when people point fingers and turn heads on the road looking at this wonderful beast.

      Areas of improvement

      1. Engine Roar - Not sure anything can be done. More than the noise, the feeling that a lot of Fuel getting burnt is the issue.

      2. Glove box - why such a small glove box?

      3. At this segment a cooler box inside was expected. Even XUV has that.

      4. Tiretronincs - An indicator would have been good. Though I have filled up Nitrogen and dont want to look at it in another two months.

      5. Other indicators - Fuel average, distance to next petrol pump etc would have been good.

      6. Hand brake should move towards the driver :)

      7. The second row should be able to slide forward so that one can make more space for the third row.

Exterior it looks awesome from outside, chrome detailing gives it a preimeum look and led lights during dawn makes it eye catching however it is , i belive still a step behind against its rival like santa fe.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) It has a long feature list along with great interior that no rival can match, everything you touch feels premium. i loved the sunroof.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox Its engine is quite strong, far better than that of fortuner but gets beaten by hyundai santa fe, fuel economy is the area where it rerally disappoints you, coz when i drove it from indore to gwalior, it gave 9-10 kmpl which may hurt you, gearbox prevents shift ups and keeps engine at high rpm keeping a little extra potential so that it can make your ride effortless, this might be helpfull for small automatic cars but it did'nt needed one and that's why it gives you poor milage.

Ride Quality & Handling The ride qualiety is amazing. Suspensions are soft and makes it impossible  to feel any bump, the speed sensetive stearing wheel is amazing, it is very light at low speed as such that you can turn the car using your fingers and gets stiffer as the speed rises, there are optional features such as headrest infotatement screens , live tv , head up display, rear camera, front and rear guard etc.

Final Words I say it is a great car but if you can extend your budget you can have a better car such as santa fe.

If I have to rate top 5 suvs under 30 lakhs then my list would be-

      1) HYUNDAI SANTA FE

      2) SSANGYONG REXTON

      3) TOYOTA FORTUNER

      4) CHEVROLET CAPTIVA

      5) MITSUBISHI PAJERO SPORTS

Areas of improvement A better engine giving out more power and torque with a better fuel efficiency would push it to no. 1.

max amount of features against rivalsfuel economy, slow auto box, brand image.

      Exterior

The car looks luxurious compared to other SUV's . Appearence is simply world class . I would have preferred slightly more aggressive front look but this SUV is overall very proportionate. Neither LOUD CURVES like XUV nor too tall like Scorpio nor too BOXY like the land rover nor too small like the BMW X1.

      Interior (Features, Space & Comfort)

Easily the best in class interiors , Lots of space for keeping bottles , Sun roof is very nice to have . Seats are luxurious and memory position of driver seat where it remembers your last seating position is excellent for getting in and out. Last space is excellent for carrying luggage but average for seating.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox

Very powerful engine. A bit noisy while switching gears in automatic but smooth once cruising. If you use manual mode it is even better and you can operate in manual mode both by using gear shift button as well as steering mounted buttons. After initial lag the acceleration of this SUV is again best in class. Not as fast as a BMW sedan but very high acceleration and pick up. I have driven bolero and scorpio and they are just not in the same class. Mileage is easily 9 kmpl in mixed mode handling with 75% AC use and at least 11 kmpl on highways. I have driven only 600 KM so mileage may go up as I am not exactly pushing the car .

      Ride Quality & Handling

Excellent on highway and in cruise control mode you feel you are in an aeroplane . However one has to note that it is bit bouncy on speed breakers or on the off terrain / broken roads with pits. I think this is because the ground clearence is quite high for Rexton so you feel bit of rolling motion. Mahindra should think of lowering the height a bit based on feedback.

      Final Words

Feature packed , hi tech SUV . Once you sit in this you are going to hate other SUV's. No offense but other SUV's like fortuner , endeavour look at least a generation behind in the feautres and interiors.

      Areas of improvement

Body roll / bounce issues on potholes , Rear camera would have been better instead of just a sensor , electrical adjustible mirrors .

Looks , Size , Engine , Smoothness , Sun Roof , superb turning radius , bluetooth , GPSBody Roll due to high clearence.

Exterior V GOOD, looks like prev M class Benz.

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) EXCELLANT for the class ratHer looks D PLUS segment car. good quality of plastics n leather. itis full of gagets.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox The IIIrd gen Rexton is a good effort by Ssangyong. However slow  pickup, engine has to work hard to achieve 100km/h but once achieved pulls well, it is a mamoth engine with 180 plus horses. The engine makes a noise irritate the one in the car. M&M should refine the engine the present behave like old generatin. M& M known for the quality n agile products and has a benchmark reputation for SUV in India. Balero, scorpio n XUV 500 with a trck records. They should check for the slow gear shift, preferably replace it with a dual auto gear transmission.

Ride Quality & Handling The suspension is soft, handling is good. breaks work well.

Final Words If M&M has to compete with the big players like Tayoto (Fortuner), Ford (Endavour), Chave(Captiva) and Mitshubishi(Pajero), they need to sort-out the essence of the car i.e. engine noise by its refinement, slow auto gear shift with dual auo gear transmission and insulation of chamber. M&M auto will keepup its rputation intact by intervening for the lack of qulity deep in the heart of the car.

Areas of improvement M&M need to sort-out the essence of the car i.e. engine noise by its refinement some RPM adjustment, slow auto gear shift with dual auto gear transmission and insulation of chamber. Suggestions are easy to post than to do the way people like, many factors viz. cost, technology etc matters.

Exterior One look at it and it looks close to Mercedes M Series. Like the design of the vehicle as it looks macho and robust

Interior (Features, Space & Comfort) Very plush leather upholtery interiors. Much much better than XUV500 which uses cheap plastic. The Kenwood 2 Din deck with large screen and multiple functions are also good.

Engine Performance, Fuel Economy and Gearbox The car starts slowly and gear shift is bit tardy. But once it goes beyond 40 kmph, it runs on the road. I reached 100 kmph in around 12 secs which is cool. Fuel economy is bad around 9.5 kmpl. But if you are want to gor luxury SUV with economic price tag, fuel economy becomes bit secondary. Especially considering 2.7 litre engine.

Ride Quality & Handling Enjoyed driving on msooth as well as bumpy roads. The suspension is neat and smooth.

Final Words Would like to exchange XUVV500 for this. aroun 24 lacs ex-mumbai price, is much better than Santa fe and fortuner which have similar features

Areas of improvement Competitive pricing. fuel mileage.
