The Renault Koleos is an all-terrain crossover that has been available in India since 2011. The Koleos is assembled in South India at the Renault-Nissan’s plant at Orangadam, making it a viable option in the premium crossover segment.
The Renault Koleos is easily noticeable owing to its large size, making its presence felt amongst other cars on the Indian road. The front fascia has typical Renault design treated with chrome and black colour. The headlamps are rounded, but the overall design is such that the car does not look feminine. The distinct creases on the side and the squat stance distinguish the Koleos from other SUVs. There is even more bling at the back with extra chrome, but the India customers won’t complain about it. The Koleos is a premium car and the French carmaker has taken care of the detailing very well; the black and chrome coloured alloy-wheels, silver coloured roof rails, side indicator integrated OVRMs and a rear spoiler go well with Renault’s design philosophy.
The interiors are on par with vehicles in the E-Segment. The Koleos has ample space, luxurious trim and many other features. The dashboard is pepped up with easily reachable and has simple to use controls. The speedometer housing and display is quite stylish. The car gets all leather upholstery and Bose music system is a standard fitment. There are many larger and small pockets in the cabin that come handy. The other features include smart access card key, sun blinds, coat hanger and a cooled and an illuminated glove box. The automatic headlamps is a standard feature for all variants and the split tailgate can be used as a bench in case the owner is hosting an outdoor party! Renault has taken care of the safety with eight airbags, speed-limiter, ABS with EBD, brake assist and electronic stability program that has earned the Koleos 5-star rating from the Euro NCAP organisation.
Only the diesel version of the Renault Koleos is available in India. The oil-burner 2.0-litre engine produces 148bhp of power at 4,000rpm and a torque of 320Nm at 2,000rpm. The engine is mated to an all-wheel-drive six-speed gearbox. The car gives an ARAI claimed fuel efficiency of 13.73kmpl. Renault claims the car has a precise steering feedback, easy drivability and impressive stability. The Koleos has electronic AWD system that can be operated with a toggle switch; it has three modes – 2WD, Auto and 4WD lock.
The Renault Koleos competes mainly with crossovers like Honda CR-V, Chevrolet Captiva and Hyundai Santa Fe. However, due to pricing strategy opted by Renault it also competes with BMW X1 and Audi Q3 to some extent. The Renault Koleos is available in three colours – white pearl, ultra silver and black metallic.
