The 2015-2016 fiscal has just concluded and we have listed the top 10 best-selling cars in India for this period. An informed guess would be that Maruti Suzuki's product has again topped this list. And this guess is not just right, but the carmaker also continues to have the most number of cars on this list. Take a look.
The most long-standing bestselling car in India has undoubtedly been the Alto and it retains this title. More than 2,63,422 units of the Alto were sold during 2015-16, as against the 2,64,492 units in 2014-15.
With the advent of the Indigo CS, Maruti Suzuki also made its mark in the compact sedan segment in India by introducing the Dzire based on the Swift. Ever since then, there has been no looking back as it continues to enjoy success with 2,34,242 units sold this time. Last fiscal, the company had sold 2,10,649 units of the compact sedan.
The Maruti Suzuki Swift is one hatchback that is still ruling the B segment for over a decade now. Despite a slight drop to 1,95,043 units this fiscal, as compared to 2,01,338 units in the previous fiscal, it has still bagged the third spot on this list.
The 'tall boy' hatchback is continuing to sell in the Indian market at a steady rate. This time, however, with 1,69,555 units sold, the sales figures have increased as against the 1,61,250 in 2014-15. This enduring success can be attributed to its popularity with the masses.
Hyundai has marked its entry into this list with the Grand i10. When the car was launched it achieved several landmarks in terms of bookings and still continues to bring in huge sales numbers. In the 2015-2016 fiscal, 1,26,181 units of the hatchback were sold.
Hyundai had planned to improve their domestic sales and the Elite i20 has helped the carmaker tremendously in achieving this. The car has set a new benchmark in the premium hatchback segment by receiving high bookings constantly. Along with the i20 Active, a crossover based on the i20 hatchback, it accounted for 1,04,841 units in the last fiscal.
The Maruti Suzuki Celerio easily achieved the one lakh units sold milestone within just 16 months. The carmaker also launched its indigenously-developed diesel engine for the Celerio which finds itself on this list for the first time.
Despite the changing buying trends in the Indian market, the Mahindra Bolero has shown immense perseverance for decades. It has been the highest selling SUV for nine consecutive years and is on this top 10 list with 81,559 units sold.
First launched in 1985, the Omni was only the second car Maruti Suzuki launched in India. No wonder it sold well in the Indian market back then but continues to be appreciated by many. With the sale of 79,949 units in 2015-16, more than the 74,686 units in 2014-15, the Omni has yet again retained its ninth position.
10. Honda City
Known for its frugal engineering and market credibility, the Honda City has become the benchmark of reliability. It is in its fourth generation now and with 77,548 units sold, it manages to squeeze into the last spot on this list.
