  • The Worthersee lake hot hatch festival saw the 217 bhp Polo R concept being unveiled. The Polo R is a street legal version of the rally spec WRC Polo.
  • The Skoda Citigo Rally concept was also showcased at Worthersee. The design that looked stupendous when rendered on paper, did not work up to expectations. The extra large front facia and wide body kit did not go well with the compact Citigo lines.
  • Ford had unveiled its new Fusion based NASCAR race car in January 2012.. Fans will get a glimpse of the new car this Thursday in North Carolina.
  • Toyota is also going strong into NASCAR with its 2013 Camry based stock car with a composite body over tube frame rear-wheel drive and a V8 engine.
  • Ford's logo, the Blue Oval, that was pledged against a loan package in 2006, can now be pulled out of danger as the company was able to sustain though the recession by restructuring. Now that credit rating agencies like the Fitch have upgraded the credit ratings of Ford, the loan burden will ease out and the pledged intellectual property can be taken out of the equation.     The New Jetta will be bigger than the outgoing model and will get Volkswagen’s new family look. The Jetta is likely to come with a petrol variant as well and even a six-speed manual gearbox. Last year, the old Jetta got a common rail engine to meet the Bharat Stage IV norms and this year the German manufacturer will launch the new generation.

The three brands together delivered a total of 32,359 vehicles to customers in the first nine months of 2010 as compared to 13,956 cars sold from January to September 2009.

    The Volkswagen brand has emerged as the largest selling brand of the Group in the period with impressive sales figures of 15,957 vehicles in the period as against 2,201 cars sold in the corresponding period in 2009, a big leap of 625.0 per cent. Skoda sold 14,224 cars from January to September 2010 as against 10,415 cars sold between in the corresponding period in 2009, a growth of 36.6 per cent. Audi reported a growth of 63.4 per cent percent with 2,178 vehicles sold in nine month period in 2010 as against 1,333 vehicles sold last year.

    In the period January to September 2010 the best-selling car from Volkswagen is the Polo. Another sought after car from the Volkswagen brand is the Jetta, which was launched in India in 2008. It is assembled in the Volkswagen’s Group Aurangabad plant. The best selling cars of Skoda in the first nine months 2010 are the Fabia and the Laura.

    Audi A4 and Audi A6 are amongst the list of top luxury cars worldwide and were best selling from January to September 2010. Both are assembled in Aurangabad plant along with the Audi Q5. In the luxury SUV segment too, Audi continues to retain its leadership position with the Q5 and the Q7 registering impressive sales.

    “Expansion of the Puebla plant is a major step towards the future for Volkswagen in Mexico. As a result, Puebla remains the main supplier of compact class vehicles in North America. Efficient production with high localization and new products tailored to the wishes of our North American customers will bring further growth momentum in Mexico,” Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann said. With an annual production capacity of 525,000 units, Puebla is now one of the largest car manufacturing plants in the Volkswagen Group.

    Heizmann reiterated the Group’s plans to build a new engine plant as part of the growth strategy for North America: “The new plant is to supply our factories in Puebla and Chattanooga with the latest generation of engines from 2013. These engines will set the benchmark in terms of consumption and emissions.” The choice of location has not been finalized yet, but a decision will be taken soon. Mexico is one possible option.

    Under Strategy 2018, it is planned to invest up to US$1 billion in Mexico over the next three years. Some of these funds will be spent on constructing new production plant for the Beetle successor. The new version of the style icon will be launched in 2011 and will safeguard a total of 2,000 jobs in Puebla.

    Volkswagen announced the debut of its all-new Jetta. Delivering style, precision German engineering and Carefree Maintenance, all at an extremely accessible price.

    “Today marks the beginning of a new era for Volkswagen and for Jetta,” said Stefan Jacoby, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. “The all-new 2011 Jetta is a class-up driving experience with the kind of styling, design and power under the hood normally found in more expensive luxury cars. At an extremely attractive price, this car is sophisticated, fun to drive and practical.”

    The Jetta has been completely overhauled, inside and out.  Its new wheelbase and exterior length are significantly bigger than its predecessor – resulting in superior performance, more space and greater comfort. The extended wheelbase of the car will be something to look out for as their competitors the Chevrolet Cruze and the Skoda Laura cannot boast of this wider base.

    With the extended wheelbase, the Jetta now has additional legroom. A common conceptual thread throughout the car is the intuitive controls and well-arranged instruments.  The new steering wheel designs impress both visually and to the touch. The Jetta is definitely a fully loaded car and having further enhanced its safety standards, the car is worth a second watch. It will certainly give its competitors a run for their money.

    “So far, the comparatively high growth rates on the world’s automotive markets and for the Volkswagen Group are the result of special effects such as the very weak basis in the relevant prior-year period.  Thanks to its convincing model range, Volkswagen is currently reaping greater than average benefits from very good demand on important markets such as China and the USA,” Christian Klingler, the Group Board Member for Sales, commented in Wolfsburg. “However, this trend does not allow us to draw any conclusions about further developments. 2010 remains a challenging year for the automotive industry,” Klingler emphasized.

    In China, Volkswagen’s largest market, the Group delivered 777,800 (524,600) vehicles during the period January to May, a rise of 48.2 percent. Deliveries in India doubled to 13,500 (6,600;+104.3 percent) units. Growth for the Asia-Pacific Region as a whole ran at 47.6 percent. In addition, Europe’s largest automaker reported a rise of 34.8 percent on the South African market, with 29,400 (21,800) vehicles sold.

    In the US, the Volkswagen Group enjoyed a high growth during the first five months of the year with deliveries of 145,500 (109,000) units representing an increase of 33.5 percent. In Europe, the Group delivered 1.42 (1.34; +6.5 percent) million vehicles. Growth on the markets in Western Europe in particular was strong: 121,500 (84,100; +44.5 percent) vehicles were delivered in Spain and 174,900 (132,300; +32.2 percent) units in the UK.

    The Volkswagen Group performed significantly better than the market, with deliveries only declining by 12.0 percent to 436,900 units in Germany. Volkswagen, the core brand, delivered 1.86 (1.57) million vehicles during the first five months, representing an increase of 19.1 percent. Here, too, deliveries rose on almost all markets worldwide.

    In China, the largest single market, 619,700 (434,500; +42.6 percent) units had been delivered by the end of May. In terms of Volkswagen models, the Golf remained the undisputed leader with worldwide deliveries totaling 278,200 (228,200; +21.9 percent), followed by the Polo with 225,200 (176,400; +27.7 percent) units. The Jetta, Santana and Lavida are particularly popular in China.

    From January to May, Audi delivered 455,700 (374,500; +21.7 percent) vehicles to customers worldwide. The Ingolstadt-based company reported an increase of 14.6 percent for the month of May, delivering 94,900 (82,800) units. Growth was particularly strong in the regions of South America (+79.8 percent) and Asia-Pacific (+58.9 percent). In China, the premium brand sold 88,500 (53,600; +65.0 percent) units. Worldwide demand for models such as the Audi A4 saloon, the A6 saloon and the A3 Sportback was particularly high.

    The Škoda brand delivered 307,400 (263,800; +16.6 percent) vehicles in the period to May. The company grew deliveries on the Chinese market by 90.9 percent to 69,000 (36,100) units. In Western Europe, the brand reported an increase of 71.8 percent in the UK and 65.4 percent in Spain. Deliveries also rose on the brand’s home market of the Czech Republic, increasing by 20.9 percent to 24,700 (20,400) units. In terms of vehicles, the Octavia model series enjoyed high growth.

    The Yeti, a Škoda newcomer, performed better than expected, with deliveries of some 21,000 units. SEAT also reported growth worldwide, delivering 147,600 (137,600; +7.2 percent) vehicles. The brand’s models were particularly popular on the home market of Spain, where 44,900 (30,700; +46.4 percent) vehicles were delivered, and in countries such as the UK, where 15,000 (11,000; +36.4 percent) customers purchased a new SEAT. In terms of model series, the Alhambra and the Exeo Sport Tourer were among the leaders.
