Suzuki reportedly has been operating its Hungary plant at a reduced capacity for quite some time now. While news of this scaled-back production run doesn’t hold much interest to us, what’s worth noting here is that the Japanese automaker has ceased production of the Splash hatchback (Maruti Ritz).
In keeping with its target output of about 150,000 units for the Hungary plant, the brand is operating using one shift instead of the usual two. Suzuki has even stopped production of the old Euro-spec SX4.
Preparations are now on for the production of the new Vitara starting early next year. Shown at this year’s Paris Motor Show, the crossover model will go on sale in Europe in 2015. According to a few reports, the brand is not looking for any layoffs and will return to two shifts once the production of the new Vitara begins.
Suzuki’s other models built in Hungary include the new S-Cross crossover and the Swift – the brand’s top selling model in Europe. Now that it has stopped producing the Splash, Suzuki is expected to come up with a replacement model which will eventually compete against the likes of Volkswagen Golf and the Ford Focus in Europe.
