Nissan’s new ProPILOT competes with Tesla’s Autopilot

Nissan in Japan has edged ahead of other Japanese car makers and is now the first Japanese manufacturer to launch a self-driving car.

Sources reveal that the ‘ProPILOT’ technology in the Nissan vehicle can control acceleration, steering, and braking when it is driven on a single expressway lane. The system offers lane-centring and distance-monitoring functions for expressway driving. ProPILOT does not need the driver to use the accelerator or brake pedals in traffic situations. For now, Nissan has altered the existing Serena minivan and equipped it with this self-driving tech.

Prices for the Serena with the ProPILOT technology starts at 2,916,000 yen (Rs 19.48 lakh), and the Serena without the self-driving technology is priced at 2,316,600 yen (Rs 15.47 lakh). Nissan is optimistic and expects to sell a total of 8,000 units of the Serena each month.

With Nissan leading the game in Japan for cars with self-driving tech, we can expect the competition to heat up. A whole lot of action is coming our way very soon.
