Mitsubishi has fully redesigned the Pajero Sport, seven years after the arrival of its predecessor in Thailand. With sales expected to start in Thailand later this year, the Japanese carmaker plans to introduce the new Pajero Sport sequentially in Australia, the ASEAN nations, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America and Russia and, as with its predecessor, to sell the new model in up to 90 countries.
Design wise, the new Pajero Sport uses Mitsubishi’s "Dynamic Shield" front-face design concept, which is an evolution of the design seen in successive models of the Pajero series. The SUV uses a lot of chrome bits and LED lights to gain attention. Meanwhile, the rear end is relatively bold, thanks to its controversially styled taillights and the massive tail gate.
The new Pajero Sport is powered by a 2.4-litre turbo diesel engine that comes mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Thanks to this newly developed transmission, Mitsubishi is claiming a 17 per cent improvement in fuel economy over its predecessor. It also achieves CO2 emissions of under 200 g/km which puts it into the lowest bracket of the new excise tax structure to be introduced in Thailand in January 2016.
Having sold up to 4 lakh units of the previous generation model, Mitsubishi is looking to replicate the success with this new model which will compete with the all-new generation of the Ford Endeavour and the Toyota Fortuner.
