- The Ciaz debuted the new 1.5-litre petrol engine with its mid-life update.
- The same BS-VI compliant petrol engine will later make its way to other models as well.
Last year, Maruti Suzuki debuted the all-new 1.5-litre K15B petrol engine with the mid-life update of the Ciaz. Now, Maruti Suzuki has commenced the testing of the BS-VI compliant version of the same motor. The test mule of Ciaz – with an emission testing device sticking out of the exhaust – was wearing the ‘Smart Hybrid’ badging as well.
The Smart Hybrid set-up uses an integrated starter generator and two batteries as seen in the current iteration of the K15B engine. In the BS-IV guise, this motor puts out 103bhp and 138Nm and comes with brake energy recuperation, torque assist and an idle start-stop function. It can be had with either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. And the ARAI claimed fuel efficiency of this motor is 21.56kmpl. With the BS-VI changes, the new motor will surely have revised figures but what remains to be seen is whether both the transmissions will be carried forward with the update.
After the Ciaz, the BS-VI compliant version of this motor will surely make its way into other models in Maruti’s line-up. This includes the Ertiga, S-Cross and finally in the Vitara Brezza as well. We expect the BS-VI compliant Ciaz to be launched in the country in the months to come. So stay tuned to CarWale.
