Maruti Suzuki SX4, The Ultimate Male Accessory, Launched

Maruti SX4Q. Which is the best mid-size car to buy- Fiesta, Verna or City?

A. I advise to wait for the upcoming New Baleno(SX4)

Sounded something familiar???? Well yes, whoever wanted to purchase a C-segment car got this answer, at least I used to recommend this to everyone because I though that it was definitely worth waiting for it. So now the wait is finally over, a long long wait for many. Its finally here, which they call the ultimate male accessory?.

On 7th May, 2007, Mr Jagdish Khattar, The managing Director of Maruti Udyog Limited finally unveiled its all new and very much awaited by all, MARUTI SUZUKI SX4. Bad time starts for the competition in this segment. This is like a ??never-before?? from Maruti. Really stunned everyone with its only C-segment offering.

Maruti SX4 RearThe masculine looking SX4 is finally ready to be driven on Indian roads. It is launched with a 1.6L power house, A 16 V DOHC with 4 cylinders, which gives maximum power of 102bhp @ 5500rpm and maximum torque of 145Nm @ 4200rpm. It comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox. The car is launched in three variants, Vxi (base), Zxi and Zxi with Leather Option. The price (ex-showroom New Delhi) is Rs.6.18 lakhs, Rs.6.89 lakhs and Rs.7.24 lakhs respectively. The car is 4490mm long with a very Indian-road-friendly ground clearance of 190 mm (for Zxi. It??s 180 mm for Vxi).

SX4 is available in seven cool colors (all metallic): Metallic Silky Silver, Metallic Clear Beige, Metallic Midnight Black, Metallic Sunlight Copper, Pearl Metallic Arctic White, Metallic Supreme Red & Metallic Azure Grey. It has very big wrap around head lamps and very attractive tail lamps. It has a very masculine looking front end, very tall and very good body aesthetics with dynamic bodylines.

Maruti SX4 Interior

The car has very pleasing beige & dark grey two-tone interiors, material used is of high quality. Zxi variant has amazing features like Dual Airbags for driver and co-driver, ABS with EBD (Anti lock Braking System with Electronic Brake Distribution. This ensures absolute prevention of skidding on applying the brakes suddenly even on wet surface) and front fog lamps. Other useful goodies available with the Zxi version are automatic climate control, integrated In-dash CD player with AM/FM tuner, a patch antenna at the rear window for uninterrupted reception, 4 speakers and 2 tweeters. Zxi also features on-steering audio control switches for ease, height adjustable driver??s seat, alloy wheels & keyless entry. Leather seats and leather-covered steering wheel is also available in ZXi as an optional package for some 40,000 rupees extra.

There is a lot more to tell about, just waiting to get my hands on it soon. Apart from the looks, let us see how well it performs on the road. Honda, Hyundai & Ford must pull up their socks now and plan something to stop this roaring Maruti. Now Honda also must have started thinking to bring in its new-generation Honda City soon.

  8. The Suzuki SX4 ?? a large hatch based on the same platform as the Swift, but bigger and more spacious ?? got a tremendous response in international markets last year. Customers, magazines, even bystanders and jaywalkers loved that car. At the 2007 New York Show, its new cousin, the SX4 sedan made its debut, just a few days ago. What is most significant is that we know that the SX4 sedan will replace the Maruti Suzuki Baleno. (Is it the indian sx4 is streched to a sedan from the japanese - US hatchback)

While the built-in-Japan, the Indian SX4 will receive a thoroughly reworked Baleno motor ?? 1600cc, 16-valve DOHC, inline-four motor making approximately 102 bhp. Which is roughly the average peak power for the segment. The American and Indian cars will both have five-speed manual transmissions, although there will be a generation’s gap between them.

The SX4 chassis evolved from the sparkling Swift, so the SX4 sedan promises to be fun to drive as well. The Indian SX4s are likely to sport a ‘rough road package’ which translates to stronger components and the ability to take quite a bashing.

The look of the SX4, according to Suzuki, was inspired by the Japanese kabuki masks. Which explains the aggressive front-end and grille. The Swift-ish rounded wedge shape is very evident and the car will be personable. It has all the right styling elements from the arched fenders to the low, rising waistline.

On the inside, Suzuki has been careful to make the SX4 sedan an enjoyable car to live in. All the doors open wide, the cabin promises to be spacious and the tall seats should also make for a commanding driving position. Suzuki says the SX4 sedan has the largest overall interior space than its competitors .

  11. It is a better car in mid segment. It will beat all the petrol cars in India in this segment(like Honda City , verna etc.) but in this segment Maruti should go for some diesel verson like versa-diesel or Sx4 - diesel.

There are no details of mileage the car is giving. Kindly give us a detail of mileage as the car is giving in hill areas. May it can beat all the records, Hope so.

By Yugendra Sudershan on May 16, 2007

  13. The comparison of dimensions given by Mr.Sanjeev Sharma, 11th May 2007 is very informative. I was eagerly waiting to buy the new version of Baleno (SX4), but its size is very disappointing. Its unconventional size is a deterrent. The car will, it appears, be the largest and odd looking in the parking lot amidst other cars. Can we still call it a car(!) because of its large size especially the height than its contemporaries . Its size dissuades me.

    By Mathew J on May 19, 2007

  14. The car(SX4)’s height is more than all other cars. May look like a van. Can we call it a vancar or carvan. It seems Maruti has made a mistake. The old version was better looking. Can Maruti launch the old Baleno back into the market?

  15. SX4 versus Honda City

Is the SX4 worth buying as compared to the Honda city? Well its not tested as yet there is no clue on its mileage. One doesnt even know much about its engine.

Given all this should one prefer it over the Honda City or the Verna petrol?

Everybody is concerned on its mileage but there seems to be no real answer on that front. So what can one expect.

Please advise, I am contending between SX4, Honda City, and Aveo.

  19. Folks,

I am he proud owner of an SX4 Zxi and should say this is the best buy of the lot. I have done close to about 1500 kms in the last 10 days and have got an average of about 12 kms to the litre with the air con on. I should say in bumper to bumper traffic the mileage should be around 10 kms to the litre.
On the higway on just one drive I got an average of around 14 which is again with a little driving in the city on the same tank full. All this before the first service I think is very good.
I read earlier some people were deterred by the height of the car. All I’d say is see and drive the car to experience it.

  22. Hi,
I test drive sx4 last week.

    Pros:
Good exterior design. great powerfull engine, good luxury and safty devices…

    Crons:
Small size back seat (bad news for back seat passangers) poor visibility & viewing angle through back mirror for driver, 10kpl mileage….

    Thanks

  24. SX4 Really worth a risk

Is SX4 really worth taking a risk. With fuel efficiency being quoted from 10kpl one is not very happy. For a car coming from the Maruti bandwagon one expects a better mileage than that.

Also is the AC really effective. I am not so impressed with the AC of the Swift.

Finally is it still worth buying the Honda or should one buy this?

By akanksha malik on May 25, 2007

  25. Welllll this looks Suzuki answer to City.Mileage will be a critical factor in India. It’s less than city i.e 11 kmpl in city conditions.Suzuki should match the Warranty to what is being offered by GM.

It is going to geat watching Suzuki nurture SX4.

By mabs on May 25, 2007

  26. Hi,

I had a test drive on SX4 zxi, it was great. But I feel there are a few things which hopefully maruti will sort out in coming months such as

Air conditioning - at 43 degrees outside in north india, I found the cooling lacking compared to my existing old Baleno.

Rear Seating - I am afraid Maruti has made a mess of it with the horrible central arm rest. On a long drive the third person in the middle is sure to end up with a slip disc.

Sound system - very very ordinary sound, they should have gone for a better model / oem supplier.

Power window switches are very cheap looking.

The leather seat covers don’t justify the price, hard and artificial feel.

Other than above it felt like a fine and very roomy car with a resposive engine.

By Shrikant on May 29, 2007

  27. Hi EVERYBODY,

Good JUMBO car for driving ONLY having powerful engine but

AC is not that effective (same problem with Shift).

Noise is there in the cabin.

Rear seats can accommodate only two persons COMFORTABLY. I don’t know why they have raised the rear part(Cinema hall type sitting so that rear passenger can also have good look on the road– Better view). Due to that what I feel rear passengers are not comfortable and it seems that that they have extended the rear part to a sedan from the Japanese - US hatchback). It is better sitting in esteem than SX4.(Highly disappointed)—Good luck for the rear passengers.

Suzuki says the SX4 sedan has the largest overall interior space than its competitors (may be in few mm).

Even failed to understand why this much of ground clearance. Indian roads are not so bad plus not many speed breakers on highway. After all, we are going to drive this car on roads not somewhere else—–.

From my point of view if you love driving then its good choice as rear passenger (on long drive) will have to face problems.

Before buying this car don’t test drive it( Believe me good for driving)BUT sit on rear seat on rough road and have the feeling for your dear ones.

    Happy driving

  28. test drove the SX4 ,nobody seems to talk about the gear box not very smooth on the SX4, very cheap looking power window switches, rear arm rest crazy ,will seat only a small child in the middle, mileage a great cause for concern, nobody knows how much and the dealers are keeping quiet. other wise rest is good

    happy driving

has anyone read the june issue of autocar or overdrive? they have given a complete review of the SX4’s mileage.

  30. well according to me the maruti people have made a good come back with their latest model sx4.Good style, good looks, very comfortable, reasonable price i think what else a man needs to buy a car?haan regarding mileage their is a lot of confusion but 12 to 13 on roads and 15 on highways in not at all bad.well in my opinion it is truly acar which a man needs and dreams of.

  31. Hi all,
I see a lot of qustions about the mileage . But does it really matter for someone buying a car of ‘C+’ segment ?

Also a km here and there wont really make that much hole or stich to your pocket -:)

As far as Sx4 is concerned many have pointd out odd shape , bad rear seat , sub-standard A.C. , had gearbox etc. but have ended with certifying it as a good car ! Can some one explain me minus all this can we call it a good car ?

i feel City and verna are far better in almost all departments and one should try those out before going in for SX4.

By Umesh on Jun 2, 2007

  32. gr8 comments..
    now my point of view
    SX-4 is useless..as per what all say…
stop arguing..it gives 10km/l mileage in the city..on highway is abt 12 km/l so the company is MUM..
all those looking for mileage should better look into other brands with diesel (those whose criteria is cost+mileage) and sure VERNA is pathetic..in diesel gives just 12kmpl…. NOW BE HAPPY

  33. Hey, the mileage comes different in many conditions, it varies from each people who drive the car in many different ways. The people in the mags and all those blogs say about 10 because they have given the average mileage. So it depends on how you drive on the road and the traffic condition.

  34. The SX4 is going to be a runaway success and will shake the Honda City’s stranglehold in the mid size sedan segment. Read more at http://indimoto.com/blog/index.php/2007/05/23/maruti_suzuki_sx4_india_new_baleno_launc

  38. hello everyone,
well read all your reviews one thing that i am unable to understand is why everyone is so confused on the mileage.lets see sx4`s close competitor honda city gives mileage between 10-13 and the price that we have to pay for this car is also around a lac more than sx4.after reading the reviews and the features i think the average mileage that the car is expected to give will be around 11-12 so i think or in my opinion sx4 seems to be an overall better car in its egment.

    By k.sharma11 on Jun 8, 2007

  39. hello to all
Went and checked the homepage of maruti SX4 the car looks really amazing with loads of features which most of the other cars dont offer in this segment. The price is something which everyone can afford.

    By k.sharma11 on Jun 12, 2007

  40. Dear Friends,
Only have seen the DEMO car.Looks good .Wanted to test drive;but was not given assuring us to be offered the very next day which came never.Young dynamic guys were distributing a lot of leaflets regarding price & specifications . Surprisingly not a single word about mileage. Even collected our comments and addresses also without test drive and deafening silence about mileage.
Pray to God for their prosperity without prejudice.

By Rabin Gayari on Jun 13, 2007

  41. hello friends
Rabin i read your review well it was sad to know taht you did not had a test drive of the car. There is a question regarding the mileage in your mind.Well even the exact mileage even i dont know but probably after reading so many revews and knowing about the car i think the mileage that the car should give should be around 11-12.But make sure this is not the exact mileage and it is only a guess work and probably the mileage mostly depends on the way you drive the car.The price that the maruti people are offering us is very attractive. So I think the price and other features of the car should be kept and consideration while going on for this car.

    By k.sharma11 on Jun 14, 2007

  42. Hi All,

To end all the confusion regarding mileage, here are the mileage test results. The car(ZXi version) was tested for a period of 5 days in city conditions only with the AC on. As, calculated for this time period for the total no. of runs, it gave a fuel efficiency of 11.4 kpl in stop and go traffic conditions.

It varies from person to person according to the driving style. Expect slightly better figures for the VXi, reason being the tyre size which is 195/65 R15 for VXi and 205/60 R16 for ZXi.

By Anurag on Jun 14, 2007

  43. We have done the test drive of both Honda city & SX4
City scores on interior& more useful for city conditions.

SX4 scores on power & more useful for people who drive longer distance very frequently.

Honda city to reduce price or include features like alloy wheel, temperature control, lcd etc.,in the same price

By Shivkumar & Madhu on Jun 17, 2007

  44. hello friends
now i think all of you who are around 6″ you all dont need to worry as maruti has solved your problem by giving you sx4 which has enough of head room as well as leg room…..now lets come to the problem of speed breakers and logging water during rainy seasons which are quite common in india well this problem has also been solved by maruti by giving 190mm ground clearance…… well the price which becomes a great cause of concern while buying a car, marui has given you a car with best competitive price and sx4 is an answer to that…now what else do we need in a car.i am looking forward to this car….

    By k.sharma11 on Jun 18, 2007

  45. The biggest plus point in sx4 ie., the superb and powerful engine is already in BALENO. If people are bothered only in engine they would have already selected BALENO and it would not have been stopped. The customers expect mileage and comfort too. That’s why City is in top. Maruti should have considered this.

By Thilothama on Jun 19, 2007

  46. hello
when we are talking about sx4 then the first thing that comes in our mind is the safety features such as ABS, Airbags that are unavailable in any of the cars in this segment plus the “M”series engine, comfort and style has been given the priority with the best available price. So i think in this sx4 wins the race.

    By k.sharma11 on Jun 26, 2007

  47. Hello,
SX4 is superb by design, and is less priced. But interior is very poor, especially the plastic quality of door trim, etc.

By SanilKS on Jul 18, 2007

  48. It is still speculation about the mileage. Maruthi has been able beat everyone on the look, price. Can someone who have already used confirm the actual mileage (highway, city, ac and non ac)

  49. Hi all,

how is the road handling of the SX4 compared to the city. Due to the high ground clerance it may not grip the road that well especially at high speeds on the highways/expressways.

  55. I was confused by the comments but was astonished by the looks so I went to take a test drive. Its macho and aggressive on exterior at the same time doesn’t compromise on safety features infect its packed with so many safety features which no other car in the range is providing. Driving is my passion and I have driven almost all cars of the same segment but this one is really superb, engine is very powerful and delivers great amount of torque and pulling power at the same time fuel efficient (don’t forget 1.6 L engine) boot space is huuuuuuuuuuuge and head room leg room are simply unmatched.. Now I m pride owner of a gr8 car SX4 (HR 26 AL-3708).It’s a superb car and worth spending the money all those going for new car in the range chk it out before shelling out the money.

  56. I own a gems & jewelry business in delhi and I hav to travel to jaipur very frequently (abt 4-5 times in fortnight) hence I wanted a car which is not just stylish and luxurious bt also safe and fuel efficient. My family used to be always tensed due to highly accident prone NH-8 bt now after purchasing sx4 I m relaxed a bit since its packed with world class safety features and this god of power is fuel efficient too (16+ mileage on NH-8). It meets my requirements to the fullest. It serves my business needs, gives cozzzzzzzzy cumfrt & also addresses my concern of maintaining status. It gives me sense of pleasure when ppl cum 2 me n ask me abt the car whnevr I go fr meeting or social gathering. It seems tht maruti has made it just to serve my requirements and of all those sharing the same requirements

  58. I am an IT professional and lead a team, m quite aggressive in nature and work on “Get Goers” principle, I m very particular abt wht I purchase, it must reflect my personality. Recently I bought a new car Sx4 and I can only say that if I were to be changed into a car thn I wud surely be just like it. Exteriors are just mesmerizing and no sedan in the same segment gives me. I feel proud whn I see tht hw my car stands out in huge parking lot of my company filled with similar looking cars.
I m gr8 believer of performance and I feel thr is no substitute for it here also it bags the title and the kind of pulling power it gives me I don’t have to frequently switch gears in traffic jams. The spacious passenger cabin is cozy n comfortable while traveling long distances its simply the best sedan I hav driven in my life so far and far better thn other sedans of the segment wch boasts of luxury and gives u a femenish look on the name of luxury i think Maruti has done a gr8 job to create a car for male community wch reflects basic traits of a man yet being luxurious & safe.

  59. I am getting a SX4 ZXi this week. Anyone knows whether the company fitted stereo can be changes with another of my choice. would the audio control on the steering still work…anyone?
and by the way, it sure looks promising. Overall, it is a tempting package..a far better one than verna/aveo/city/fiesta.
I have researched, test rode cars for 4 months before finally making up my mind. My next choice would definitely have been Honda City GXi

  60. Honda sure is a car with better/more refined engine. Even with its weaker engine, it offers almost same acceleration as that of SX4. The interior of city GXi is better.
If SX4 and City were priced same, then city would have been the automatic option.
But with ABS/air bags/price difference of nearly 1 lac…SX4 is a wiser choice

  61. I bought one ZXi not because of the road tests in india but the because of the fact that it is a joint european venture between fiat and suzuki new engine too that makes it better than the cars available in india. All other cars sold in india in are normally 4-5 year old cast offs that are upto 10 years out of date with the exception of new 4×4’s that are now coming into india.
The SX4 is not the fastest or the best car by far in europe in fact its a car they car bearly sell even by giving interest free loans but I can say one thing its among the best on offer in india so my advice as its all new from the ground up its the one two go for. As regards the fuel economy….. If your buying a car like this you dont need to ask that is just embarassing if you need economy buy the tata nano !!!!!

  62. I’ve driven over 5000km on SX4 within Delhi and mileage is only between 8/9km with Ac.Other than that, its fantastic….

  63. I am planning to buy SX4 Zxi. I had a test drive on the high way to day morning. I liked this car very much. If you want to have a good driving feeling, SX4 will be a good chocice. The thing I didn’t like is the front-right side corner beam design. It just stops the driver to have a good vision on an object coming from right.

Did anyone have faced the same issue?

  64. I am having SX4 ZXI myself and I have no such problem at all.You will get used to it in one or two hours of first day drive.Wish you best of drve in SX4,go for ZXI

  65. One more thing,I am getting a milage of 12.3 kmpl in city driving with full ac on.And 15.6 kmpl on the 4 laned highway. This to my mind is simply very good.

  66. Well, I am here to tell you that a good product will neither need an advertisement nor promotion to boost sales… and one of a kind is SX4! I am owning a ZXI variant from dec 07 on.. top speed 190 km/hour in Chennai-Bangalore highway, which i never thought i would try.. Very Stable up to 170 km/hour and i could feel little vibes after that… mileage in city => 11-12 and highways ==> 14-15 with air con… pretty decent value for money product.. prestigious too…!

  73. SX4 is a fantastic car. It is a car for the highway. I like it;it looks comforts. Mileage is around 11.8 to 13.5 in City driving with AC always on. Overall an awesome fun to drive car. SUV like driver view. it is a car for real driving enthusiasts.

  74. Test drove the SX4 and was impressed with the performance of the car on highway & rough roads. Great features…great pricing. The downside being the interior space and plastic used. The music system provided could have been better. Overall a value for money car like all Maruti cars..!!

  77. Maruti Sx4 stands tall on road. It has got head turning looks. The interiors are loaded with too many features. the leg room and head room is too good and the seats are very much comfortable. The engine is responsive and SX4 is stable at high speeds too. I fell in love with Sx4 immediately after test driving it. Inspite of my speed driving it is giving me 13.5 kmpl mileage. Maruti Sx4 is a true value for money sedan :)
