After being the second best seller in 2007, Toyota has moved a step further as the Japan-based company sold the most cars in 2008. General Motors was the manufacturer to sell the most car and trucks in 2007, the American auto giant had held that position for the past 77 years.
There has been a decline in GM’s sales figures in 2008 by 10.8 percent as compared to 2007. The Detroit-based manufacturer sold 8.35 million units in 2008, whereas Toyota sold 8.97 million units in 2008.
The main reason for decline in the sales of GM was due to the economic turmoil in the United States. In 2008, the car sales in the US were just above the 10 million mark, with a reduction in sales by 35% as compared to 2007. In 2007, Toyota sold 3,000 units less and Toyota was expected to overtake GM in terms of sales.
