Mercedes-Benz, with its Affalterbach-based performance brand, has unveiled their most ambitious sports car yet. Where most of their performance cars use AMG at the end to talk about their pedigree, this one is called the AMG GT.
Derived from the SLS AMG, the new two-door coupe will rival Porsche 911 with a price tag of USD 2,50,000 once it goes on sale in 2015. The lines are pretty similar to its predecessor, but the AMG GT does not get the iconic gullwing doors. It derives power from a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 developing 450bhp and 600Nm in the standard variant and 497bhp and 650Nm in the GT S.
The engine sits behind the front-axle delivering power to the rear-wheels via seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, that can get the GT S to 100kph mark from standstill in 3.7 seconds. The engine at the front while rest of the mass is closer to the rear wheels giving this sportscar a near perfect 47:53 weight distribution.
The basic design is reminiscent of the chassis SL300, yet the AMG GT looks every bit modern. The interior is jazzy, Mercedes calls it the ‘Drive Unit’ and it is designed to look like a V8 engine. Like all AMG cars, there will be plenty of optional upgrades available like forged wheels, ceramic brakes. It also gets a very interesting feature in Dynamic Plus package that lets you adjust the engine and transmission mounts for sport driving, apart from offering two transmission modes, retuned steering and increased negative camber at front axle.
Mercedes, in recent times, has offered almost all of its performance cars in India and we are almost certain that the AMG GT will also be offered here within few months of its global launch, although in very limited numbers.
