Current-generation Hyundai i20 to make way for new Elite i20?

In a report by Autocar India, it has been revealed that the current-generation of the Hyundai i20 will be discontinued once the new Elite i20 goes on sale next week. The existing i20, which donned Hyundai’s fluidic design language for the first time, was launched in March 2012 and since then the car has been at top of its game, thanks to the spacious interiors and the long list of equipment on offer.

Now that the company is set to introduce the Elite i20 which is said to be bigger, bolder and better in terms of performance and efficiency, it is safe to say that it will be positioned as a more upmarket hatchback compared to the old i20. However, adding the ‘Elite’ moniker to the new i20 also suggests that this new model will be sold alongside the outgoing i20 – a practice Hyundai has undergone before with the i10 and the Grand i10.

With a longer equipment list, more spacious interiors and better styling than before, the new Elite i20 is expected to be launched as a proper premium hatchback offering from Hyundai India. This means that the brand will be able to price it at a premium as against the outgoing model. What this also means is that buyers opting for the top-spec version of the old i20 could be inclined towards the Elite i20 simply because of the fact that the latter is an all-new product.

Whatsoever be the case, Hyundai India is sure to witness a rise in sales for the i20 whether it decides to discontinue the existing i20 or continue selling it alongside the new Elite i20.
