Land Rover’s best-selling model; the Evoque is set to move to its next generation. The new baby Range Rover was first featured at this year’s Geneva Motor Show and features minimal cosmetic changes from the current model.
Land Rover has opted not to tamper with the extremely successful design, one that has pulled the company out of near bankruptcy. The minor cosmetic changes include new badging and redesigned alloy wheels. The rear bumper guard and the exhaust tips get black cladding; while the choice of colours available on the interior has also been updated.
What is interesting about the 2014 Range Rover Evoque though is hidden within the car’s monocoque chassis. Confirming widespread speculations, Land Rover has confirmed that the new Evoque will feature an all-new ZF-sourced nine-speed automatic gearbox, along with the Land Rover -made one petrol and two diesel engines as standard.
Land Rover has taken the electronic wizardry to new level with the introduction of Active Driveline ‘on demand’ four-wheel drive system and Active Torque Biasing. The former enables the car to switch between two and four wheel drive systems on demand in a matter of 300 milliseconds, while the later splits torque between the rear wheels, improving traction and stability. Also standard on the 2014 Evoque are features like torque vectoring by breaking, parking assist, wade sensor, lane departure and traffic sign recognition system.
Land Rover has not announced pricing of the new 2014 Evoque, but with the extend of technology on offer, it is likely that the car will be priced higher than the current Evoque which starts at Rs 54.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). Currently, the Freelander is the only SUV from the Land Rover arsenal that is locally assembled in India. Hence the facelift will see Indian markets soon after its global launch as the units arrive as CBUs. But if Land Rover intends to make a stronger impact in the growing SUV market in India, the company will have to opt for the assembly route to keep prices at bay for the Evoque.
