Skoda Fabia road test : The Little German

In the beginning, ‘hatchback’ was a term used for car buyers at the bottom of the pecking order. They got them either because they were on a tight budget, or didn’t have enough parking space for a boot. There were also a practical bunch of buyers who knew and understood that they didn’t need a boot, and felt shortchanged because the choice they had never really included ‘luxury’. Skoda took the plunge, and offered India the Fabia, a hatchback with a saloon price and more luxury than anyone dared to put into a hatchback before in our market. Is it worth the money?

Ride and handling, telescoping steering wheel, diesel resale

Cost of ownership, petrol resale value

I own a Fabia 1.2 HTP Ambiente for 2 months now. I am pretty happy with the car, except for the refinement of the engine. Once you close the windows it is super silent but with windows down is a different story. Service could be an issue, for that matter I don't think there is an automobile brand where everyone is happy about the service. For me it is just a myth that Maruti offers great service. I have personally experienced bad Maruti service and I know people who crib about some Honda dealers.

Fabia is not really a roaring success, but has sold in decent numbers. If you look at the number of Fabia's available in Carwale or any used car site, you will hardly find any. For me that means people are happy with their purchases, this after discounting the fact that the car has not been around for long(this also affects availability in the used car market). Also Fabia is rated as one of the most reliable cars in UK. Routine service should not be too expensive, but accident repairs will be way too expensive. It is a terrific car to drive(I am not talking about an enthusiast driver).

The Fabia 1.4 MPI was a disaster and that is what earned a bad name for this car. I have hardly seen any complaints against 1.4 TDI and 1.2 HTP models.

Spacious and better seating position and seats than any other car I considered before I bought Fabia. I looked at Fiesta /i20/Punto. If you are not in a hurry I would recommend waiting for some more time to check the possibility of a new engine being introduced.

I am too looking to hear from genuine Fabia owners about their latest experience with Skoda Service and replacement parts.

Thank you Charles. Through your network could you get answer to my querry please?

Are there any Fabia owners here on the forum who would talk about level of satisfaction on the product and the service?

Thanks.

..Sandip.

Sandip, I don't own any car, but have driven the Fabias over the course of the reviews. The product gets almost full marks from me, but based on personal experience with Skoda, I'm not so sure about the service.

Dear Charles,

How long have you been using Fabia, and in which city? What is your rating for the product and the service?

Thanks

..Sandip

Skoda Auto (Czech), the manufacturer, is a fully owned subsidiary of VW.

@Sandip: It most certainly is a German car. We didn't have the time to check, but for the most part, VAG cars usually have some parts or the other labelled with 'VW' and four interlocking rings.

From the web you will most certainly find that the car is based on Volkwagen's PQ25 platform, which is also the base for cars like the VW Polo, VW Fox and Seat Ibiza.

I am considering Fabia 1.2 petrol, clasic model. User rating and reviews are poor in Mouthshut.com particularly about service and some technical issues.

Can I get more user views on this forum? Also is it German car as described on Carwale review or Czeck?

@Binoy: there are some exceptions to the rule. Most premium manufacturers get by with a space-saver and not a full-size spare.
