Toyota halts production in South African plant

If the number of problems Toyota has been facing off late is to be counted then the company seems to have been jinxed. After the automaker faced a lockout in India in March this year relating to labour problems, now the Japanese carmaker has halted some of the production in its South African plant.

There is a strike in companies supplying car components due to which Toyota said it would halt some production from Tuesday. Because of supply chain problems which is related to the stoppage, not only will the production be affected but eventually the sales of the carmaker will also drop.

Mary Willemse, spokeswoman for Toyota, said, "Toyota will close two production lines from Tuesday at our Durban plant."

Last time in India, the major lockout between Toyota Company and labourers had resulted in stopping the production for a long time. However, the automaker came to a quick resolve and lifted the lockout considering the inclination and in the interest of the majority of the law-abiding team members. As a result neither of the two major launches from Toyota- the Etios Cross and the new Corolla Altis, were affected.

The current strike has hit not just Toyota but companies supplying components to the automobile sector.
