-The registration charges will be included in the four-wheelers’ cost
-This move will bring uniformity in price across states
Nitin Gadkari, minister for road transport and highways, has announced the government’s plan to make it mandatory for automobile manufacturers to roll out vehicles with factory-fitted tamperproof high security registration plates. Vehicle manufacturers will fit the plates and embossing will be done later at the dealership level. The registration cost will be included in the vehicle’s cost.
With this move, the government intends to bring uniformity across states and also relief and convenience to consumers. Currently, each state needs to purchase these plates before fitting it onto the vehicle. The prices for these plates range between Rs 800 to Rs 40,000. Gadkari further added that the security will not be compromised and the norms will be standard across all models, be it economy or luxury.
The government recently made it mandatory for all cars manufactured after July 2019 to have airbags for drivers and seat-belt reminders besides speeding alert system beyond 80kmph. Moreover, the vehicles will also get reverse parking sensors for additional safety. The notification issued by the Road Transport and Highways Ministry states, "Motor vehicles of category M1 (cars), manufactured on and after the 1st day of July, 2019, shall comply with the additional safety features and its requirements stipulated in AIS-145 -2017."
