Mercedes-Benz has displayed the 2016 AMG GT at the ongoing New York Auto Show in the US. The AMG GT is the successor to the German manufacturer’s illustrious supercar, the SLS AMG, and the second sports car to be designed completely in-house by Mercedes-Benz’s skunk works division - AMG.
You can find influences of the SLS AMG in the overall design of the AMG GT, though it does miss out on the trademark gullwing doors. The AMG GT gets a toned down design for the front end, which makes it look much more docile than the SLS AMG. Even the body lines are very streamlined and less dramatic, which should improve the drag coefficient of the car.
Mercedes-Benz offers the AMG GT with a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine, in two states of tune. The standard AMG GT is good for 454bhp and 600Nm of torque while the AMG GT S version is rated at 503bhp and 650Nm of torque. Both the versions are rear-wheel-drive cars and come with a seven-speed AMG SpeedShift dual-clutch transmission. The AMG GT S version also comes with an electronically controlled limited slip differential system, which should aid the car’s handling and performance on a race track and on the road.
While the SLS AMG was an all-out flamboyant super car, the AMG GT is more of a sports car and has been pitted against the likes of the Porsche 911 and the Audi R8. While the price of the standard AMG GT hasn’t been announced yet, Mercedes-Benz revealed that the AMG GT S will retail at USD 1,29,000 (Rs 80.26 lakh). Deliveries in the US are expected to commence in the latter part of this month.
