Live: Hyundai Elite i20 launch in India

Hyundai is all set to launch the new Elite i20 for the Indian market in the next few hours and we at CarWale are bringing you all the details live from the venue in Delhi. The new premium hatchback is making its global debut today and will be sold in India alongside the existing i20 model.

The Elite i20 is expected to be offered in 10 variants – five petrol and five diesel. The nomenclature will also remain the same – Era, Magna, Sportz, Sportz (option pack) and Asta. The same engines from the current model will continue to power the new Elite i20 – the 1.2-litre four-cylinder Kappa petrol developing 83bhp and 113Nm and the 1.4-litre CRDi with an output of 89bhp and 219Nm.

The stage is set as Hyundai India Managing Director Mr. Bo Shin Seo addresses the media.

The company has sold 7.34 lakh units of the i20 in India so far. The i20 claims over 50 per cent share of the premium hatchback segment in India.

Hyundai India as lined-up big plans to export the new i20 to many international markets. Amongst all overseas operation India is important market for them, he says.

Mr. Bo Shin Seo says that India is one of the key drivers of Hyundai's operations.

The new Elite i20 is powered by one petrol and one diesel engine. The 1.2-litre Kappa VTVT engine produces 83bhp of power and 115Nm of torque. The 1.4 U2 CRDI diesel engine, meanwhile, produces 90bhp of power and 220Nm of torque.

Compared to the old model, the Elite i20 has a longer wheelbase by 45mm.

Casey Hyun, Creative Design Manager, HMC is on stage now. He is talking about the creative inspiration for the Elite-i20.

Hyundai claims fuel efficiency figures of 18.60kmpl for the petrol model and 22.54kmpl for the diesel model.

The car will be available in a total of five variants - Era, Magna, Sportz, Sportz (O) and Asta. Era being the entry-level variant and Asta being the top-spec variant.

The Elite i20 has been conceived using Hyundai's Fluidic 2.0 design language. The car has a higher ground clearance than before. 170mm as against 165mm of the old i20.

The dynamic appeal of the car gets accentuated by long swept back headlamps and LED side mirrors. Rear has a coupe like styling, to appeal to the youngsters. The interiors echo the example set by the exteriors.

Hyundai says emphasis has been put on making the interiors more premium and sporty looking.

Like before, Hyundai is offering a long list of features with the new Elite i20. Cabin offers generous space in legroom and shoulder room. 285 litres of boot space. Interiors are finished in dual-tone scheme.

Auto light controls which turn on the headlamps, auto folding side mirrors, tilt and telescopic steering, smart key with push button feature to allow keyless entry and exit are some of the interesting features this car boasts of. 60:40 split for rear seats also offered on select variants.

Smart pedal system overrides the accelerator to apply brake for better control is an important safety function.

The new car also boasts of automatic wipers, two airbags, ABS, 2Din audio system with 1GB internal memory and 8 speakers. Bluetooth and steering mounted audio controls also on offer on higher level variants.
