BMW unveils the Vision Future Luxury Concept at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show

BMW has officially unveiled the Vision Future Luxury Concept at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show. The concept is an elegant evolution of !the BMW Gran Lusso Coupe concept, which was showcased at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este, last year. The Vision Future Luxury Concept gives us a glimpse of BMW’s new design language which will heavily influence the rumoured all-new flagship sedan, the 9 Series.

The Vision Future Luxury Concept looks like a four-door stretched version of the Gran Lusso Coupe concept, which was styled by the Italian design house, Pininfarina. BMW claims that the concept has been designed using the lightweight principles of its ‘i’ range of cars, with liberal use of carbon fibre in its structure, it is the carbon fibre construction that has allowed the seat frames to be integrated into the frame structure of the car. 

Aerodynamics have played a major role in the design of the Vision Future Luxury Concept with vents and air breather systems all around the car. The front is dominated by a huge trademark kidney-style chrome grille flanked by sharp laser headlamps. In the side profile, BMW has eliminated the B-pillar to accommodate suicide doors, which beautifully complement the coupe-like roofline and trunk. 

BMW has been very innovative with the interior of the Vision Future Luxury Concept too, though a majority of the technology might not be seen in production cars for a while. A head-up display provides information about the car and its surroundings, a touch screen on the dashboard, equipped with BMW’s ConnectedDrive and enables information sharing between the passenger and the driver with gesture control. The rear passengers can be kept entertained, courtesy two more touch screens integrated into back of the front seats. True to its name, the cabin is upholstered with luxurious leather, wood trim with chrome garnishes.

BMW hasn’t revealed anything about the powertrain of the Vision Future Luxury Concept, though the ‘eDrive’ badge and quad tail pipes indicates that the car is a plug-in hybrid. The German manufacturer has already showed its technical prowess with plug-in hybrid cars with the i8 and i3 and we can expect this system to be powerful as well as practical. Though BMW claims that the Vision Future Luxury Concept is just a design study, we think that this car is an important pointer of BMW’s perception of its future luxury cars, especially the next-generation 7 Series and the rumoured 9 Series.
