The Swift was introduced in 2005 with a 1.3-litre petrol mill, which was replaced in 2010 to match the BS IV emission norms. A 1.2-litre K-Series engine took its place along with Fiat’s 1.3-litre DDiS. Both these engines continue to soldier on in the current second-generation Swift.The hatchback isonly available with a five-speed manual gearbox.

 

The 1.2-litre K-Series with VVT is a petrol unit which produces 85bhp and 114Nm of torque. The engine is available in the LXi, VXi and the ZXi variants and returns an ARAI certified mileage of 18.6 kmpl.The petrol Swift returns the best mileage figures among its competitors,the Fiat Grande Punto (15.2kmpl), Volkswagen Polo (16.47kmpl), Hyundai i20 (18.15 kmpl) and theToyota EtiosLiva(17.1kmpl). The same unit is also used in the Maruti Suzuki Eeco, Ritz and the Dzire.

 

Fiat’s 1.3-litreMultiJet diesel engine was introduced in the Swift asDDiS in 2007. Churning out 74bhp and 190Nm of torque, this engine is also available in three variants, the LDi, VDi and the ZDi. The diesel returns an ARAI certified mileage of 22.9 kmpl.Even in the diesel version, the Swift tops the mileage figures in the segment, beating Mahindra Verito Vibe (20.8 kmpl), Chevy Sail (22.1 kmpl), Tata Indica Vista D90 (21.12 kmpl), VW Polo (22.04 kmpl), Fiat Grande Punto  (20.5 kmpl) and the Hyundai i20 (21.93 kmpl).

 

Besides the Swift, the Fiatdiesel engine is also employed in the Maruti Suzuki Ritz, Dzire, SX4,Ertiga.General Motors, which has assisted Fiat in developing this engine, uses this engine in its Chevrolet range, the Sail Hatch, Sail Sedan, Enjoy MPV and the Beat TCDi. Tata introduced the engine as ‘Quadrajet’ in its Indica Vista and Manza, with the Vista D90 using a ‘tuned’ 90bhp version. Fiat itself uses the engine in the Grande Punto, Linea and the Fiat 500.
