The cab-forward design results in more space on the inside. Visually, the City does not look balanced somehow despite of the fact that Honda tried hard to make her look good. The sharply raked windscreen and the wide tail-lamps do offer some style.

The interior is where Honda City scores brownie points. The cabin is spacious and feels light and airy owing to a big glass area and use of light colours. The Honda impresses with its interiors. Quality, look, feel, plastics and layout – everything is spot-on and difficult to find fault with.  The seats are supremely comfortable and are well bolstered. There’s ample leg and shoulder room which makes for a relaxed ride. The thick A-pillar affects the front near side visibility – the only shortfall in the otherwise excellent visibility that City offers. Since the glass area is quite large, the car heats up extremely fast and the air con has to work hard to get it to a comfortable temperature. There are lots of storage options at your disposal which makes carrying essential knick-knacks trouble-free.

The engines on offer are two extremes. At the one end of the spectrum is the 1.5-litre, four-pot i-DSI mill which is fairly high-tech and makes use of two spark plugs per cylinder to aid fuel efficiency. The 77bhp that it churns out is least in the segment and the i-DSI gets trounced by every other premium mid-sizer in the outright performance stakes. But when it comes to mileage figures, the City i-DSI trounces every other petrol car and a few diesels too! The dual spark technology helps complete combustion of fuel which results in phenomenal fuel efficiency which is close to 12kpl in the city and 16kpl on the highway. The 1.5-litre VTEC is the one for petrol heads and delivers astonishing performance while having a modest thirst for fuel. Both engines are extremely tractable and perform well in low as well as midrange while the VTEC comes into its own when shown the far side of the rev counter.

The manual gearbox is one of the best we’ve come across. Shift quality is better than slick and the throw is short. The golf-ball like gearknob is good to hold. The ratios are matched perfectly to the engine and do a good job, both with i-DSI and VTEC motors. The CVT tranny is perfect for city use. It has a slight performance compromise, but the ease of driving more than makes up for it. The biggest change vis-à-vis the earlier “new” City has been in the dynamics. The body roll is more controlled and the high-speed stability is top notch. The steering could have been better though; it still is overtly light at high speeds and that does not inspire confidence at all! The reworked suspension is extremely pliant and the ride quality over any surface is unparalleled in the segment. The brakes are very potent and offer great bite and have good feel. They are progressive but the lack of ABS even as an option, except on the VTEC variant, is startling.

The City justifies its name. It is a ‘just perfect’ sedan for city use. The light steering and small turning radius make it extremely manageable in tight spots and the fuel-efficient nature of the engines is another virtue that holds its own and makes the Honda City a formidable product. And then you get the typical Honda reliability and snob value to add to the pleasure of owing one!
